"It is a frightening thought, that in one fraction of a moment you can fall in the kind of love that takes a lifetime to get over."
Serena hadn't realised that it had taken her longer than usual to get back to the tower, taking several detours along the way. At least until she spotted Harry, who had left the Room of Requirement much later than she had, with Ron and Hermione in front of the crackling fire in the common room. She had probably been too lost in her thoughts.
"Have you been watching Harry snog or why do you look so distraught?" Ron asked her with a laugh as Serena sat down with them. She looked at him in irritation for a few seconds before turning to Harry with wide eyes. "You've been kissing?"
"Yeah... Sort of..." Harry replied in a heavy voice. "But she... she was crying."
"Are you that bad at kissing?" Ron teased him, but his laughter faded a little. He obviously seemed to realise that something was bothering his best friend.
"Cho's been crying a lot lately," Hermione interjected, looking up from the letter she was writing. If Serena had to guess, she would say that it was to Viktor Krum.
Ron began to grin again. "Surely a bit of kissing could cheer her up?"
Serena and Hermione glanced at each other at the same time and rolled their eyes. "Ron," Hermione replied in a dignified voice, dipping the tip of her quill into the inkwell. "You're the most insensitive wart I've ever had the misfortune to meet."
Grunting, Serena turned away, actually wondering how Hailey put up with him sometimes. On the other hand, she had managed not to break in McLaggen's presence, so Ron should be a piece of cake.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Ron replied indignantly. "Who cries when you kiss them?"
Hermione put down her quill with a sigh and Serena knew that she would probably give one of her famous speeches now. "Well, obviously she's very sad that Cedric died. Now she's upset because she was fond of him and now Harry. And then she probably also feels guilty because she thinks she's insulting Cedric's memory by even kissing Harry, and she's probably also worried about what all the others might say about her if she starts going out with Harry."
"Plus, she's afraid of getting kicked off the Quidditch team," Serena added to the lecture and remained silent. In fact, her own life seemed quite uncomplicated by contrast.
"A person can't feel all that at once," Ron broke the silence. "He'd explode!"
"Just because you've got the emotional range of a teaspoon doesn't mean we all have," Hermione said dryly.
