"It's ironic isn't it? How hope keeps us breathing just to kill us in the end."
The two teenagers appeared so suddenly in front of a huge estate that a startled bird flapped its wings indignantly and took to the air with a loud cry. Serena didn't look after it, however, but tried to analyse the outline of the unfamiliar surroundings before rising and marching angrily towards Edmund, who had landed a short distance away from her. "Are you crazy? You're not even seventeen yet!"
"Would you rather be in the clutches of the Ministry now?" he growled, brushing the dust off his uniform. "My father will get me out of this somehow and besides, I'll be seventeen in a few weeks."
"Well, I'm looking forward to it," she snorted and crossed both arms in front of her chest, while he merely began to grin again. "You can be right there." He nodded over to the estate, which almost resembled a small castle, leaving Serena staring in bewilderment. The lack of enthusiasm she exuded seemed to be visible as Edmund tried to convince her of his intentions. "It's okay. We often have guests and lots of guest rooms."
However, this statement rang even more alarm bells for Serena rather than making her change her mind about the uneasy feeling in her stomach. "I'm not going in there with the escaped Death Eaters inside."
"Now, don't be such a pain in the arse." The Slytherin rolled his eyes, causing her to snort indignantly. After all, she didn't have to run into her crazy grand cousin.
"Don't worry, we don't have any guests at the moment," he grinned and added something that made Serena punch him in the upper arm: "I think so."
But even this reply, the last part of which had probably just been a joke, didn't calm the uneasy feeling in her stomach. Nevertheless, and this astonished her all the more, she let Edmund pull her in the direction of the huge black iron gate. What other choice did she have?
The gate wasn't locked or it was simply designed to let in the members of the prestigious family, at least it opened without squeaking or making any other sound. The Halls must be rich, there was no other way to put it, there was no other way to describe the magnificent entrance hall that the two students entered.
Almost automatically, Serena's gaze slid upwards to the ceiling, which was even higher than the one at Hogwarts and the walls now echoed with the sound of approaching footsteps. She had to swallow a lump in her throat and almost unconsciously stood a little further behind Edmund. She didn't belong in this place and it was probably an understatement to say that she felt more than a little out of place.
"I specifically said that no one would be allowed in here without prior notice..." The loud, commanding voice of the head of the house fell silent almost abruptly when he saw the two people, whom he had probably expected less. "Edmund, what is the meaning of this?"
