After I politely asked the cab driver to take us to the airport, I woke Scarlett up. "Where are we going?" She asked groggily.
"Somewhere safe." I whispered.
After I pulled Scarlett's sweat pants and hoodie on her, she fell asleep using my lap as a pillow. I stroked her chocolate brown curls. I was finally going to be able to give her a safe life. It made me tear up because I was finally out. We were going to be ok. All I needed to do was play it safe until my birthday. I needed to become Scarlett's guardian. Not Dad.
We arrived at the airport. I payed the driver, lifted Scarlett up and collected my backpack and suitcase. Her limp head fell into place on my shoulder as we waddled into the airport. After I checked in, I found our gate and sat down on one of the couches. I laid Scarlett down and placed her head in my lap. During the wait for our flight to be called, I fished my cell phone out of my hoodie pocket and called my best friend Demi. She said anytime come with live with her in Texas. My hometown, where my mom was from and where I was headed. We lived in Atlanta because thats where Dad was from. We moved there trying to cope with losing my mom. That was before the drinking started. Demi knew what I was going through because we kept in touch. We'd known each other our whole lives.
"Hello?" She said groggily since it was the middle of the night.
"I left."
"Good. You needed to get out. Is Scarlett with you?"
"Of course she is! I could never leave her behind with that monster. Plus you're talking to her new guardian as of my birthday."
"OH MY GOD SEL THAT'S AMAZING!!" Demi screeched through the phone. I swear the whole airport heard her."Where are are you now?"
"Airport. Im flying home." All of a sudden Scarlett started squirming.
"I got to go Demi. Scarlett's starting to wake up and she needs to know what's going on. I'll call you when we land."
"Ok. Hope you and Scar have a safe flight and I can't wait to see my "sisters". Love you both. See you soon!"
"Ok. Bye Demz. Love you."
Even though we weren't biological sisters with Demi, it felt like it since we were so close. I hung up just as Scarlett sat up. She rubbed her big brown eyes and looked up at me. Here we go.
"Why are we in an airport?" She questioned.
"Because Dad wasn't a good parent so we're moving back home. It's just you and me sweetie because Mommy made me your guardian angel. I'll protect you."
