ALONE
There are no tears
There are no words
For words and tears are impotent
They can never portray the sorrow that engulfs me
Words cannot speak of the pain that seeps from my soul
Only silence can articulate my torment
As no words, sound or fluid can ever match the deathly melancholy that cauterizes my being
As light turns to dark and the sun sinks into the earth
I remain unmoved and disregarding of the world outside my window
I am alone in my grief
Yet not alone
For with me I carry the weight of your memory
So truly, I am never alone.
FEAR
Fear can be intoxicating
It builds inside to solid mass
Upwards it travels like a dark escalator
Reaching for the inner spaces that only you can see
Fear can be so stealthy
It creeps beside the shadows
To all outside observers
You’d never know it’s there
Fear can be a fiendish friend, a pal to keep on side
You can use it for excuses
And stay and hide inside
It is your constant companion
When others aren’t around
It clutches at the heart
A lover and protector
Fear will whisper secrets
Only you could know
You’d better stay at home today
Please don’t take that flight
It keeps you safe, entombed, enshrined
It will extend your life
But fear is not a buddy
The world we must explore
So bury fear within you
Don’t listen to its sneers
Be strong and be resilient
Ignore fear's rude advice
Go out and get a life.
BEHIND THE CURTAINS
She watches from behind the curtains
A shadowy ghost that no-one sees
She knows each and every one of you
By name, by sight, routine
Chill creeps behind the curtains
No welcome fire to keep her warm
The price of gas beyond her means
A hovel of a home in which she dwells
Newspapers piled high, rotting fruit in the bowl
No one to care about litter or falls
This is not the life that was chosen
This is the life that loneliness has thrust upon her
The clutter her familiar, loving friend
She watches as you hurry by
You’re off to work, just passing by
You sometimes see the curtains move
You know therein a lady lives
One day you’ll knock and say hello
Just check to make sure that all’s ok
And so she watches everyday
Prays that to her doorstep your feet will stray
That’s all she wants you see
Acknowledgement
A friendly wave
A greeting as you go about your way
But we both know
That behind the curtains she will stay
Sadly alone until her dying day.
