I WALK ACROSS THE RESTLESS SAND
I walk across the restless sand and shudder in the wind
It tears across my delicate skin like diamonds cutting glass
I raise my hand to shield my face from daggers made of grit
While wicked whispers from the gale abuse my ringing ears
With all my strength I fight the storm that batters at my frame
I won’t turn back, and will not fear the darkening skies above
As blackened clouds build in the sky I struggle on determined
I clasp my arms across my chest, courageous in my efforts
My frozen face accepts the kiss of stinging darts of rain
What madness came upon my mind to step outside in this?
I’d rather be beside a fire, all snuggled in my chair
A mug of tea between my hands, this chill does not compare
I stop awhile as twelve small paws go thundering past my legs
I’m breathing hard against the wind but smile from ear to ear
I watch them run into the surf, all tails and ears and fur
My madness stems from ownership of three demanding dogs
Who love to run into the wind, on sand, on grass or path
I watch as they all chase the waves, so joyful in their play
It lifts my heart to see such glee, and I know the storm will pass
So I walk across the swirling sand, laughing heartily in the wind
I made a promise to my dogs to walk them every day
It is a pledge that I will keep, come rain, or wind or sun
But honestly on a lovely day, it's less hazardous and most definitely a lot more fun.
