Once upon a time there was a nerdy brunette,
She listened to rock music and tended to forget
That she couldn't fall in a trap, not this time around,
She couldn't fall in love because she'd already drowned

One day at school she met a blond and blue-eyed jock,
Who all the girls fell for and their gazes interlocked
She stared and stared till she snapped out of her dream,
Dropped all her books and then internally fangirl screamed

For the popular boy who she'd just bumped into,
Was the one who handed her all the books strewn
With a smile that made her melt inside,
He left without even saying  goodbye

But she never lost hope that she'd meet him again,
She believed this wasn't the story's end
After class she waited in the hallway,
Looking out for Prince Charming who'd made her day

Though he never came she still didn't fret,
She remained cheerful and wouldn't forget
Then went by a week, that proved to be a long haul,
She kept looking out for the stranger who she'd met in the hall

When finally she spotted his towering frame,
His honey blond hair was still the same
But to her dismay he was with another girl,
A perfect cheerleader who lived in a Barbie world
She flipped her platinum hair and gave an award winning smile,
Had her arm around Prince Charming, red carpet style

Tears slowly falling as she gathered her pride,
She put away her fairytale and tried to fake a smile
For Cinderella had found Prince Charming at last,
But little Brunette didn't have the slipper made of glass

In her hurry she felt her glasses slip off her face,
But she was absorbed in her tragedies, in her moment of haste
At the strike of twelve on the corridor clock,
She escaped from Miss Popular and her beloved jock

Head in hands as she wept at her fate,
Realization struck her, she was much too late
She felt a hand at her shoulder, someone brushing away her tears,
Had her fairy godmother finally appeared?
As she gained the courage to finally lift her head,
And pour out her sorrows and the words left unsaid

But the gaze she caught wasn't of a blond and blue-eyed face,
Not the kind of person who would put you in a daze
His brown eyes sparkling, he broke into a crooked smile,
Upon seeing the brunette's tears all dried

A sweet looking boy with a novel tucked under his arm,
Asked her what had happened and told her to stay calm
After pouring out her twisted fairytale,
The Brunette realized why her ship didn't sail

Looks can deceive us and popularity isn't everything,
Handsome features weren't what made up Prince Charming
Cinderella had found her love at last,
But there was no fairy godmother or a spell cast

There was no need for magic, no need for a fancy dress,
No need for pumpkin carriages or all that mess

Before the boy went away to attend his next classes,
He handed back Cinderella's horn-rimmed glasses.

Not every fairytale ending has to be cliché. Not every happily ever has to end the same way.

So Cinderella thought she'd end up with the perfect guy. She thought that her story had to be like every other nerd girl ending up with the bad boy. But not this time around.

Even if the Prince was just another ordinary bookworm, even if there was no bippity boppity boo, even if the glass slipper was just a pair of horn-rimmed glasses- it was still a happy ending. Looks can deceive us. Popularity isn't everything.
