Chapter 40

Ryleigh's POV

Today's the day of the musical. Max decided not to drop out and finally agreed to let me go to it.

Me and the rest of the Mills family had just gotten to our seats in the auditorium.

Someone tapped my shoulder and it was Max. He pulled me out into the hallway.

"Hey." I smiled.

"Hi."

"You ready?" I asked.

He shrugged.

"I guess." He said.

I pecked his lips.

"Please take care of your head okay? You can leave if you have to." He said and I nodded.

"Okay." I said.

"Alright. I gotta go. Can I have a good luck kiss?"

I kissed him before walking back to my seat.

After the show I was able to make my way backstage. I found Harvey first.

"Harv you did great!" I exclaimed.

"Thanks." He said, hugging me.

"What about me?" A voice asked from behind. Max. I turned around.

"I think I've seen better performances." I joked.

He put his hand on his heart.

"I'm offended." He said.

"You love me." I walked closer.

He wrapped his arms around my waist.

"That I do." He said and kissed me. "How's your head?"

I shrugged.

"Did it hurt at all during the show? I didn't see you leave."

I looked down.

"Ry, answer me please."

I didn't.

He lifted my chin with his finger.

"Ryleigh."

I avoided eye contact. I don't like getting caught doing something wrong.

"I'm going to ask you one more time Ry. Did your head hurt during the show?"

I shook my head.

"Please don't lie to me Ryleigh."

"Okay fine. It did."

"Then why didn't you leave?" He asked.

"Because I can make my own decisions Max."

"I know you can. I just want to protect you." He said and kissed my forehead. "Now let's get you home."

We found the rest of his family and left the school.

I laid down on my bed and Max came in soon after.

"Hey Ry." He said and laid next to me.

I mumbled something even I barely understood.

"I'm sorry." He told me.

I shrugged.

"Come on. Talk to me."

I stuffed my face in his chest.

"I guess this is good enough." He sighed and ran his fingers through my hair.

After a few minutes he said something else.

"Are you mad?"

"No."

"Good. I wouldn't be able to handle that." He said.

"Hey Max?" I asked.

"Yeah?"

"Can we not talk please?"

"What do you mean?" He asked.

"I mean I just wanna snuggle."

"Okay." He laughed.

Max's POV

She's so cute that sometimes I can't handle it. But I wanted to talk to her. I don't really know why, I just really like talking to her.

About ten minutes later, she fell asleep. I guess I could talk now and kinda practice what I actually wanted to tell her.

"Um, hey Ry. I know you're asleep so you can't hear me right now but, um, god I don't even know what I wanna say. Why is this so hard when you can't even hear me?" I took a deep breath.

After a few seconds, I continued.

"Ryleigh, you're honestly the best thing that's ever happened to me. At this point, I really don't know what I would do without you. I love you more than anything else in the world. Heck, you are my world. And I know you love me too. But I also know that being in love scares you. And lots of things about relationships scare you too. But that's alright. I'm gonna try my best to-" I was cut off by Ryleigh lifting her head up and kissing me. Shit, she was awake.

We pulled away and sat up.

"So..." I started. "You heard all of that?"

"Yeah."

"Well, I mean, I was gonna tell you eventually but-" she kissed me again.

"I love you Ryleigh." I said.

"I love you too."

I pulled her onto my lap, facing me.

"I know that scares you Ry. But that's part of what makes me want to love you. You're afraid that if you love me, you'll lose me. But, staying with you is all I want. You're all I want Ryleigh. And I want you to be happy."

"Well I'm happy because of you."

I smiled and so did she.

"I feel like I never see you smile anymore." I said.

"Well how could I not smile when you say cute stuff like you just did?" She asked.

"Fair point."

She leaned her forehead against mine and sighed.

"Hey Ry?"

"That's me." She giggled.

I smiled at how cute she is.

"I'll wait for you as long as I have to."

She kissed my nose.

"I love you." She said.

"I love you too."

We both laid back down and fell asleep cuddling.
