(Jared POV)

After Sloane and Celise left our office, I took our last customer and closed up the place. At first I had planned on heading back to our house to do some more research on what I've become but disregarded it. I'm a hybrid and thus, whatever I'm going through can't be found in any books or the internet. Instead, I decided maybe going to see Cane would help me better understand the changes of my body. At least the wolf side.

Cane was visiting one of his businesses when I arrived at his house. A young girl answered the door and ushered me inside. She was timid but held a kind of strength that was rarely seen in someone so young. Then again when you live among the Supernatural you grow up faster than human children.

"Alpha told me to let you wait for him in the living room. It's more like a communing room for the pack members though. Sit whereever you like. I'll bring you something to drink."

Before I could respond, she'd already dashed out of the room as if hell was on her heels. It could've been any number of reasons so instead I decided to not press her on it. She returned with a glass of iced sweet tea. Even though it was clearly winter. I took a drink and gave her a smile to put her at ease.

"What's your name?"

She dipped her head low and to the side, offering her neck in submission before answering, "Ninny. Your sister helped us when my sister Sally was killed."

Her lip trembled as she recalled her sisters death. I'd heard about the story from Sloane since I'd already been kidnapped at that point. Funny how everything happening to me now can trace back to the same events that were making Ninny sad now.

"She also helped me during that time as well. My sister is good at getting her hands on information fast. Sloane also mentioned meeting you as well. I'm glad that you were able to get some closure."

The wolf who killed her sister just happened to be inside of me now but we both were avoiding that specific topic. Ten minutes later, an awkward bout of silence, Cane walked through his front door.

"I'll be with you in a minute Jarred. I'm going to take a quick shower."

Before I could respond I heard his bedroom door shut and the sound of the shower turning on. Ninny and I looked at each other and continued our awkward silence. It wasn't that I didn't want to talk to her but I didn't know what to say to her. She was a submissive female wolf which meant she was usually either mistreated or protected. Most submissive's kept to themselves and weren't much talkers in the first place. I'd always wondered if it was a hardwiring thing or if they were trained that way.

After another five minutes Cane came walking into the living room with wet hair. Ninny scurried out of the room to give us some privacy, I'm sure.

"What brings you to my humble abode?"

I raised my brow at that but decided to answer anyways. "I've actually got a few questions about what it means to have a mate."

"If you haven't noticed, I don't exactly have a Mate to speak of."

"I know that but some of your wolves do and I'm also positive that you were taught what it's like. Is there any way to stop it from happening? Can I dampen the urge down?"

"No." Cane went straight to the point without mincing matters. He seemed conflicted as if he would rather give me a tongue lashing than a simple 'no' for an answer.

"There's got to be something I can do to make this stop. I can't even control my actions around her. It kind of proves Sloane's point that Celise is in fact my Mate. Every time I'm around her I get a boner and the urge to flip her over and mount her. This is hardly logical from a sane person's perspective."
