August 2001

"Excuse me! Sorry! Shit...Sorry! Pardon me!" I called, making my way through the crowd of fresh college kids. It was a swarm to get to class, and I was determined not to get trampled on my first full day. So far, I had survived my first class. It had been quite boring actually, so I was really hoping this next class would treat me a bit nicer.

Eventually I made it, and plopped myself down next to a tall shaggy haired kid who jumped about a foot in the air when he noticed me. I chuckled a bit. "Hey. You alright there?" He ducked his head to hide a blush and chuckled sheepishly. "Yea yea sorry. I ah...Didn't hear you coming," He explained.

I smirked. "Sneakier than I give myself credit for," I joked, and stuck out a hand. "Names Y/N Y/L/N. And you?" The guy smiled sweetly, and I couldn't help but notice his rather adorable dimples. "I'm Sam. Sam Winchester," He answered and shook my hand. I grinned wider. "Awesome. Are you staying on campus or...?"

Sam shook his head. "Oh no...No not this year," He said. "I'm pretty close though. Found a nice apartment," He explained and I nodded. "Sweet. Same here. Dorms aren't my style," I explained. "I like my own space, without a bunch of crazy new college kids around me. You aren't too bad though," I winked, and Sam turned beet red.

"Well...Well thank you," He stuttered, between a laugh. I chuckled as well. I had the feeling Sam and I would end up being good friends. He was modest, soft spoken, and I really wanted to get to know his fun side, underneath all that plaid and timidity. Not too long after that the professor began her lesson and I sat back to listen.

Halfway into the class I noticed Sam was almost falling asleep. The poor guy looked exhausted. As I studied him I realized he had bags under his eyes. I was sure moving out of his parents place had taken it's toll on him. I looked to make sure the professor wasn't watching me scribbled on a sheet of paper tossing it in front of Sam.

He jolted, and blinked several times, before looking down at it, then back up at me. He opened it, and snorted softly. I smirked.

'Wake up sleeping beauty'.

He glanced at the front of the class then whispered, "Reverting back to our high school years?" It was now my turn to snort. "Sam we're freshly graduated. It's not that far behind us," He considered this and shrugged.

I smiled a bit and grabbed my paper back, scribbling my number on it and giving it back. "Shoot me a message after school. We can meet up and I'll show you around town," I whispered. Sam was smiling, and obviously very wide awake by now. "I'd like that," He whispered back.

Sure enough at the end of the day I had a new text on my mobile.

'Hey it's Sam Winchester. Want to meet at the library?'

I smiled, and called him. It was easier than texting. "Hello?" Sam's voice came through the speaker. "Hey Sam it's Y/N. I'm headed to the library. You okay with dropping our things off at my place before checking out the city?"

"Sounds great!" Sam exclaimed, and I couldn't help the smile at how enthusiastic he sounded. "Didn't expect to make a friend on the first day?" I asked, and I could almost see Sam's blush. "Well..No not really I guess," He admitted. "Well I hate to prove you wrong," I joked, and Sam laughed. "I'll see you in a couple minutes, I'm almost there," He spoke. "Sure thing, see ya gigantor," I heard Sam's squawk of horror at the nickname before I laughed almost maniacally and hung up.

"So not cool," Was the first thing out of his mouth as soon as I found him at the entrance to the library. I simply snickered. "You'll learn to love it," I promised, and patted his arm, leading him to the parking lot where I had my car parked. "Woah... You could afford a car?" Sam breathed out, sounding shocked. I scoffed. "God no. My grandparents got it for me. Hated her at first, but now believe me, it'll be a cold day in hell before I let anything happen to this beauty,"

I hopped in the drivers seat and Sam got in behind me. "Why did you hate it?" He questioned and looked at the leather interior in awe. "You must be close with your family. Especially if they got you a car like this," I scrunched my nose in response. "Not in the slightest. They only got this for me because my mom begged them. They're always give my cousins and what not huge presents, but they hate me. I'm too much of a loose cannon for their liking I suppose. Their loss," I smirked.

Sam huffed out a laugh, more from amusement than anything else. "I honestly don't know how anyone could not like you," he spoke genuinely, and I couldn't stop the smile or the feeling of warmth that spread through me. What made it especially adorable was that it seemed as if he hadn't meant to say that out loud.

"What about you then Sam? You close with your family?" I asked, while pulling out of the parking lot and onto the road. Sam's face fell slightly, and I almost felt sorry for asking. "Well...I was close with my brother...But not anymore," He murmured, melancholy in his soft hazel eyes . I could tell it was a fresh wound, so I didn't pry. "I'm sorry to hear that," I spoke sincerely.

"But listen, tonight is gonna be different. We are gonna be happy. I won't focus on my ass hole grandparents, and deadbeat dad, and you won't focus on your brother. We're gonna find an arcade, because who doesn't love arcades? And we're gonna play pac man until the sun don't shine," I promised, and Sam let out a loud laugh at that.

"That sounds like a lot of fun Y/N. Thank you," He smiled, and I grinned back. Sam Winchester. If I didn't know any better, I'd be in love with him by the end of the damn week.
