i am the tree you hate in your backyard

we won't sleep in each other's arms forever.
our bodies will act as trees, our smiles and tears falling like leaves in the winter;
all in which we will grow from learning roots,
on and on,
until we die from age.
my branches will be nimble and thin but
my motivation will overpower and
i will hold you
not forever
but for now.
because you've got me,
and you cannot get rid of me.
and someday when we die, i will be able
to look at your bark and leaves and roots
and say
forever was shorter than i thought
