everything inside me was born a realist.
but pity can turn me into an optimist.
sympathy for you can make me tell you everything will be alright, even when i know it won't.
if i see tears i am going to comfort,
if i hear shouting i am going to soothe.
despite the better half of me knowing the truth-
despite the better half of me knowing just how exactly the world works-
i will lie to you, for you.

because pity can turn me into an optimist
like no other can.
