THIRTY-TWO

Shelly – At Home

Brit and I were feeling each others warmth as we snuggled together under the covers. I hovered in a trance that immobilized me in pleasantness. Suddenly I experienced two little knocks on my leg. I recognized the pats immediately. I pulled the sheet and blanket from my eyes and remember that I had failed to lock the door.

The light from the windows revealed two sets of excited eyes gawking at me with broad giggles and a solo of. "We go to Uncle Steve's catfish farm today. You promised. Groans from Son of Dog accompanied little Brit's litany."

They hopped up and down until Brit and I were upright.

I said, "Daddy wants you two to check if the fishing gear is ready."

"We did, and it is."

I turned the Chicago radio station on in the jeep as we proceed to Anna and Steve's. It was on Children's program previous to The Elvis Presley Hour. The DJ just started playing the song. Little Brit and Gandma Yai Yeem joined in singing,

"On top of spaghetti all covered with cheese

I lost my poor meatball when somebody sneezed

It rolled off the table, it rolled on the floor

And then my poor meatball rolled out of the door..."

Amazement rendered me speechless. They knew all five verses by heart, and Son of Dog moaned to the beat. The Trio started to sing from the beginning as everyone departed the jeep. Steve directed them to pond number two where the older catfish were 14 to 16 inches long.

Brit was elevated to General. Those closest to him knew of his prominence. Those that that thought they knew all the answers were bewildered. None the less, my life was filled with love, and I experienced bliss.
