Akagi entered the class and everyone stood up and bowed.
"Sit down, you bastards." He took out his marker while everyone else sat back on their seats. They took out their books and notebooks and stared at the board.
"Alright, today—I'll be teaching you about forbidden magic."

"Uchitel, you're a pervert?" Slavik got up.
"What are you studying these days?" Akagi asked him.
"Am I supposed to study something?"
"Don't test my patience. Stick your ass to your chair and zip your lips."

Akagi looked at Vierne's table but she wasn't there. She had already attended this lesson about forms of magic so he thought that maybe she didn't feel the need to attend the lecture. But it didn't matter. She was no exception to the rules. No student was allowed to skip his class. He thought he'd deal with it later.

After the class was over, Akagi was free for the day. He went to look for Vierne on the second floor but she wasn't anywhere. Then, he became a bit worried. He searched for her everywhere but didn't find her. So, he decided to use his spirit energy to sense hers. But because of the interference of other demigod students' spirit energy, he couldn't reach her spirit energy. The school was soon over. He sent Melissa home to check if she was there but she wasn't. After all the students left for home, Akagi used his spirit energy to sense Vierne's spirit energy and ran towards the janitor's room.

He slammed the door open and looked around. She sat in a corner inside the Janitor's room. "Vierne!" He shouted and she looked up. He ran towards her and sat on his haunches, "Who did this? Who locked you in here—And why didn't you call for help?"

She looked at him,
"Are you listening to what I am asking?"
"I am."
"Who did this?"
"Some humans."

"Can you tell me their names?"
"No, I can't." Vierne looked ahead.
"You don't know who they were?"
"I know them."

"Then—"
"Lord Akagi," Vierne interrupted, "Can I ask you a question?"
"What is it?"

"What is the difference between humans and demons?" Akagi was surprised to listen to such a question, "Demons hurt you with magic, humans hurt you without it. Isn't that true, Lord Akagi? Thinking about it, I did nothing to deserve this treatment. And why do I carry so much anger, hate and jealousy?"

"Jealousy?"
"Yes, I'm jealous. Because humans have everything. They have a life to live, they don't live in fear of parades or losing their star spirits, they can choose different partners, they have parents who love them and people who treasure them."
"But Vierne, think about it. Humans don't have what we have—Magic."

She chuckled, "Magic? How have you still not figured it out yet, Lord Akagi? Magic is a curse. It serves you until it becomes your shackles."
"Vierne," He said.
"It isolates you and kills you from inside. It excludes you from the world you were born in until all you're left with is magic. Only magic."

Akagi didn't know what to say.
"I now know why I hate humans so much. It's because I want to be one too but I can't. Because I have magic which is becoming my shackles and I'm so afraid that I am going to be left alone."

"You won't. Why do you care about those who are different from you? I'm the same as you so I can understand you. If mortals can't be around you, I will be. After all, we are the same kind, you and I. We are stuck in the same shackles which connect thousands of us magical beings. And remember, the whole universe has magic inside it. Stars exploded to sprinkle some magic on everyone.

They died to give you what you have and nobody else does. And that's your Sila. So, never be ashamed of your sila or your magic. After all, at the end of the day, a demigod's magic defines them. And don't you want to be a gatekeeper?"

"...I do,"
"Then, believe in yourself, Vierne. Because when you believe in yourself, the world believes in you. And one day, these shackles will break and form a crown and on that day, all these mortals who have judged you will be judged by you. Such a fate, do you want it?"
"I do."

After that, Akagi decided to drive Vierne back home. Vierne was quiet and all they could hear was the car's engine.
"I'm remembering, Lord Akagi." Vierne finally spoke up, "I'm remembering my past."
"Remembering? Had you forgotten about your past?"
"Yes, and I still don't remember it well enough. It's just traces—Like a puzzle."

"There have been books on the black blood tragedy describing how everything happened. Have you read those?" Akagi asked.
"I have and I will say I was disappointed. Because nobody had done their research—It was all just assumptions."

"You mean it's not true?"
"No, they even say that I'm dead but I'm not."
"Then, you tell me the truth. How did your parents die?"

"I don't know how my parents died. All I know is that I fell sick. And soon after, the mansion caught fire. I burnt for three days, my flesh burnt and healed as I died. And when I rose again, the fire was gone and it took everyone away. So, I sat and waited for them to come back but nobody did. Nobody returned for me and why would they? I am a monster in folktales."

They had reached the mansion by then. Vierne got down of the car and walked towards the door. Akagi called Aleksei that night and told him what Vierne had told him about her past.

"How can she forget a tragic past so easily? I still remember every detail of what they did to me." Akagi said.
"She doesn't want to remember her past. She must have found something more important."
"Or maybe someone."
"Use your powers to look inside her."
"I can't look inside people. I can only do that for things."

"Milord!" Melissa ran towards him, "A blank space!"
"I'll call you later, Aleksei," Akagi said.
"Alright. Take care."

They entered the Astral world and formed the pact. It was the same as usual, Melissa and the opponent were fighting while Akagi was just looking at them. He remembered what Vierne had told him, about how humans had everything and they didn't. How magic was indeed a shackle that kept them away from humans.

'I can't believe someone else has the ability to put my thought into words.'

Finally, Melissa won and the blank space was filled with a cloud of white smoke. Akagi looked at the demigod, wailing at the loss of his partner. He knew something that perhaps Vierne didn't. That demigods and star spirits were soul mates. They are meant to be together. So, if a demigod loses his star spirit, he would spend the rest of his life alone.
