Zuko stepped into his room, exhausted. Reaching up, he removed the pin holding his crown in place, letting his hair fall back down. Slipping the crown and pin into a pouch on his belt, he proceeded to remove the shoulder padding from his armour and set it down on the bed.

His eyes were drawn to a calligraphy set, and his thoughts turned to the unaddressed issues with Mai... And Amaya's request that he find her.

He sat down, smoothing the paper, and stared at the paper, trying to come up with the right words to say.

How do you explain that you loved someone else all along? That you tried to love them because you were running from your guilt? That even though once those feelings had been genuine, they had now been given to someone else?

Dammit, he didn't want to hurt Mai. She deserved better.

Amaya's expression when she saw him kissing that girl in Ba Sing Sei flashed to the front of his mind.

Confusion, hurt, anger... sadness.

"You know, I forgave you, right?"

He looked up, seeing Amaya sitting next to the shoulder pads, poking them with a bored expression.

"Just tell her the truth," she said, looking at him. "And it would probably be better if you did it in person."

"I... can't even find the words to write; how am I supposed to find the things to say?"

"Bad advice, but ever tried white lies?"

"Amaya..."

"I said it was bad advice!"

She threw her hands up defensively, disappearing with a giggle.

Zuko sighed and returned to focusing on the task at hand. Eventually, he found the words, and his brush moved across the paper.

It was time to stop running. It was time to face his destiny.
