"Bet you, that you can't!" I tease
We run through the sandy playground and we jump on the swings.
"I can swing the highest!" I joke
"No, I can!" 8 year old Hayes retorts
The cold wind blows through our short hair, a nice chilly breeze.
"You know- you're my best friend!" he squeaks
"You're my best friend too!" I pipe
Our mothers stand up from the benches and walk towards us and say, "It's time to go sweet cheeks."
We both look at each and pout.
"I don't wanna go!" Hayes frowns
"I don't wanna go either!" I fold my arms
"Well you'll see each other at school," our moms agree
Hayes turns to me, and I can still remember his baby cheeks, dirty clothing from running and rolling in the dirt, and his aroma of pinecones
"Promise me we'll always be best friends?" he sticks out his pinky
