~ First time writing a CALM one (it's kinda CALM, kinda Muke idk), and it's not even that good. but yeah, it's something. Oh and I changed Luke's brothers' ages, deal with it.

Dedicated to @lillyyo because I love Lilac and I love you and you're awesome yo! xx /M ~

The castle is lit with candles and torches and there seems to be a neverending line of carriages arriving in front of it to drop off the noble men and women lucky enough to have been invited to the ball. They smile, some of them even laughing, as they enter the castle, happy to get out of the cold rain that’s been pouring down all day, grateful for the warmth the many fires are providing in the normally cold and drafty halls. They’re all aware that they’re the lucky ones, lucky to have been born in the right families, the wealthy families, but none of them care about the people they saw on the way there, the people whose clothes are barely staying on their bodies, the people without a home, without a bed and without food, the people who lost family members not too long ago, either to illnesses that could easily have been cured with just a warm bath and rest but that slowly killed even the healthiest, or to the new law that came into force not long ago, sending people away for the crime of being human, of love. Those people are the unlucky ones, and to most, the irrelevant ones. And tonight is all about the lucky ones, about the noble ones. They’re all smiling and laughing and showing off their fancy clothes, showing everyone, especially the servants, that they’re better, that they’re worth more. And nobody can foresee. Nobody knows what’s to come.

It started off as a whisper, a whisper that travelled from the brother of one of the banned to his mother, on to her friend and soon everybody who was nobody knew, all of the irrelevant people, all of the unlucky ones. For the first time for a very long time they knew something the others, the ones that mattered, didn’t, and not the other way around. They knew, and they were ready. For although they didn’t have much, they had something most people lack, they have faith.

So they did what they could, once they found out. Most of them couldn’t contribute with much but they all took what they could from their homes, a blanket here, an old knife covered in rust there, and gave it to the right people. Some of them however, they made all the difference. These were the people who worked for, the ones who served, the people above them. They had access to things their friends and families wouldn’t even dream of every seeing in real life, and they made sure to make the most of it. Over the course of a couple months, they’d managed to steal not only food and clothes but, and this was the best thing that had ever happened to the people in the kingdom, three swords. These three swords, the weapons that would make all the difference, had since then been snuck through the gates late at night and left in a tree not far from the main gate.

So it really wasn’t that strange that while the nobles laughed and insulted their servants, they would  just smile and carry on with what they were doing, gripping whatever they were holding a little tighter and trying not to let it show.

As the darkness falls and the rain turns into snow, something stirs in the deep forest surrounding the castle. It’s nothing more than a few leaves falling to the ground, a twig snapping, but it’s enough to scare the birds getting ready for the night up in the trees. If there had been any humans around they probably wouldn’t have noticed the movement, they wouldn’t have heard the curse being whispered as someone stubs their toe on a rock, they wouldn’t have heard the soft footsteps as this someone leaves the hiding place where they’ve been on lookout, hurrying back along a practically invisible path.

This person, a young girl with her hair tied back with a dirty piece of fabric, runs through the forest, barely making a sound as she avoids rocks and roots in a way only someone who’s been there countless times before can. After a few minutes of running through a darkening forest, scaring smaller animals and getting the bigger one’s attention, she arrives to a small clearing. She’s now so deep into the forest there’s no risk of being seen by the guards up at the castle and she’s no longer alone. People are sitting or standing under the big oak trees, listening to and watching the four people sitting around the fire in the middle of the clearing. The girl slowly makes her way over to them, not daring to look any of them in the eyes as she tells the tallest one what she’s seen and as soon as her message has been delivered she rushes back to the protecting shadows under the trees.
