Amir sat beside me a few minutes longer until he heard someone knock on his door. He kissed my cheek and departed from me as I sat here and wondered what Dr. Kim will do next. Amir didn't have any information to relay to me and said the doctor had been strange all morning. But he was always strange to me. A nurse that I barely know, but I have seen her a few times, strolled in through the door, and Dr. Kim beamed up at her.

"Nurse Wilson, take Ms. Carlyle to the canteen so she can eat something and take her medicine." I stood with the nurse and walked with her to the door. "Oh, and inform me when you are finished."

"Yes, doctor."

I turned to her and glanced around. "So what's on the menu today? Rat poison?"

She scoffed and kept her eyes straight ahead. Her short reddish-blue hair waved in my view. And her black fingernail polish on her fingers were chipped at the ends. She was definitely annoyed by listening to whatever I had to say. All I did was ask a simple question.

"Seriously, what is there to eat?"

The soldier who was guarding us stepped forward. "You will see when you get there. Please, let's move along."

The trip to the canteen was an uneventful one. I kept my eyes peering down each opened doorway and large corridors, hoping to catch a glance at Amir. But he wasn't anywhere in sight. I missed him like I missed eating my favorite candy bar. Three Musketeers.

"May I ask you something, Nurse Wilson?" I asked her. She finally glanced my way. "Today is a holiday. Wouldn't you rather have time with your friends and family?"

She stopped walking and spun around on her heel. "I did. But what's it to you, Luna?"

"I was just wondering. I mean, I had plans myself," I told her, snickering softly. "But I've seen pictures of you on the walls with your family, and you came to work instead."

Her expression remained the same. "Unfortunately, bills don't pay themselves. And my work status has nothing to do with you."

Ooh, did I hit a nerve?

"Well, you are here, and you are under orders by Dr. Kim that involves me. I know you have a daughter like I do, so I know you understand where I'm coming from on wanting to spend this holiday with her."

"I do."

"But coming to this inhumane hospital was more important?"
