13. First Gift

Yu Fei is walking toward their tent. One of the guards sees him. He immediately makes a hand sign to start the act.

San Lu brags, "It's easy to flirt a woman. All you needs is to flaunt your riches. No sane woman dislike jewelries."

Er Kang asks, "What if you fancied a ger?"

"The same thing. Shower him with luxurious goods. He would fall for you easily."

Both of them have talked loudly so Yu Fei could hear their voices easily.

Da Niu facepalms. He has a hunch Ling Wen won't appreciate it. He's different. The others won't believe him.

Yu Fei changes course. He leaves the barrack and heads for marketplace.

His subordinates are cheering for their brilliant plan.

Shower the ger with riches has been voted as the most suitable way of flirting.

Yu Fei is too stiff to read a love poem. Speaking love words and praises are out of their commander's league.

The subordinates continue self practice. They don't dare to slack off during Yu Fei's absence.

Yu Fei stares to all the jewelries displayed in the store.

Many female customers are eyeing him.

Wondering who is the lucky woman?

Yu Fei couldn't make up his mind. He makes a gesture and the shopkeeper approaches him.

He asks, "Which one is popular among ger?"

The shopkeeper points few jewelries like rings, bracelets, lockets and etc.

Yu Fei shakes his head. He thinks they look too vulgar. Ling Wen won't like it. These jewelries are more suitable for peacocks. Not his cute bunny.

He finally picks a simple looking male hairpin. It's made from white jade. Beautiful plum flowers are engraved meticulously all over it.

"I'll take this one."

"Excellent! It's one of a kind."

Yu Fei pays no attention to the shopkeeper bragging. He pays for it and leaves the store.

Ling Wen and his son are sweeping the backyard. They collect the dry leaves into a large pile.

Wen puts some Yams beneath the leaves. He burns them. The ashes shall be used as fertilizer.

It takes a while until the Yams are roasted. Wen kept adding dry leaves in the process.

Yu Fei finds him in the backyard. Xiao Bao is sitting on a big rock, eating a sweet potato (Yam). Sharing his snack with his monkey.

Ling Wen smiles while asking, "Master, would you try to eat one? It's good."

Wen takes a sweet potato from the ashes. He wipes it clean and peels the outer layer.

Yu Fei stares to the thing. Wondering if his salary is too little. The poor ger has to rely on eating roots.

Wen is staring him with sparkling puppy eyes.

Yu Fei has to accept the hideous root. He opens his mouth and forces himself to take a bite.

"Is it good?" asks Wen.

Yu Fei is surprised. It's sweet despite it's ugly look. He nods his head and finishes the root.

Wen gives him another one.

He warns, "Be careful. It's still hot."

Yu Fei eats more happily this time. In a short time, he eats three Yams.

Wen smiles when Yu Fei has eaten them.

He asks, "Want more?"

Yu Fei shakes his head.

He suddenly says, "Give me your hand."

Wen strecthes his hand and Yu Fei puts the jade hairpin in it.

Yu Fei quickly dashes away with reddened ears. It's his first time liking someone. He really doesn't know what to say to him.

Wen scratches his head while staring the expensive hairpin.

He mumbles, "It's just Yams. You don't have to pay. This is too expensive. Better return it to him."

Wen puts the hairpin away in his pocket for save keeping.

Xiao Bao has finished his share. He helps Ling Wen to gather the ashes. Scattering them on their small field in the backyard as fertilizer.

Yu Fei only stops walking after he has gone far enough. He covers his face with his hands. He inhales a deep breath.

He is a brave warrior. He has gone through numerous battles against barbarians.

He doesn't have enough courage to face his cute bunny.

He puts a hand on his chest. His heart is throbbing, wanting to break out of his ribcage.

"This is crazy...what am I going to do with him?"

When Ling Wen smiles to him, he really wanna to eat him. Poucing him like a mad dog in mating season.

"Get a grip. Don't scare him off."

Yu Fei keeps on giving advices for himself. He goes to his office to finish the paperworks. He couldn't concentrate well.

There is problem with these financial reports. He owned several chain stores all over the capital city. Most of them are inherited from his late mother.

A knock on the door.

Ling Wen comes in after receiving permission. He is still holding the jade hairpin.

The ger puts it on the new desk. The old one got broken and discarded.

Yu Fei raises his eyebrows.

Ling Wen says, "Master, you don't need to pay. Yams don't cost that much money. I planted them on my own."

"It isn't for payment. It's for you."

Ling Wen seems confused.

Yu Fei says, "You don't have any accessories. At least you have a hairpin to tidy up your hair."

"It's still too expensive."

Yu Fei rubs his chin. He looks down on the reports.

He explains, "Think of it as a down payment. I need your help to manage some stores downtown."

Ling Wen hears his explanation carefully. Some of the stores have been suffering losses in the last few years.

Wen promises, "I will go to the stores. Master, I can't promise anything."

"As long as you could identify the problems. It's enough for me."

"Thank you, Master."

Yu Fei has done a lot of things for me. I have to help him. I used to work in sales department in past life. Hopefully I could help the stores.

Ling Wen decides to visit the store next morning. Yu Fei gives him  a list of the shops and the address.

After Ling Wen has left, Yu Fei calls, "Thirteen."

The Shadow guard appears at once.

Yu Fei orders, "Guard them well. If anything happened, kill first. You have my permission."

"Yes, Master."

Yu Fei still feels heartache whenever he remembered Wen suffered a swollen cheek. Because his shadow guard hesitated to face a woman sent by Dowager Queen.
