A/N: Parts of this are based off of a twitter thread I found (link in in-line comments). I would recommend giving it a read since it does a pretty good job summing up Rika and Yuta's relationship (along with some background in RCT that'll be helpful for the next few chapters)

When Rika was still alive, she spent a lot of time with Yuta at the park. They would have water balloon fights, play in the sandbox, spin together on the big colorful spinner, and all the other things kids did at the playground. But there was one thing that Rika disliked about going to the park with Yuta. It was the way he would always look around hopefully whenever Rika convinced him to play on the swings with her. The way his head would shoot up and he would immediately search around every time he heard the name Hiyori.

Rika disliked everyone except Yuta. She loved Yuta. He was the only one in this world that she loved. Not her parents that left her or her hateful grandmother who would always blame her for killing her parents and force her to eat bowls of nasty stewed eggplant. Rika hated stewed eggplant almost as much as she hated the name Hiyori when she was younger. Rika had hoped that she would never meet this person named Hiyori because maybe it was just her childish selfishness, she didn't want anyone to take Yuta away from her. He was all she had and all she wanted. Rika thought she would hate Hiyori upon sight. She wanted to hate Hiyori.

Those feelings carried on even after Yuta cursed her. She didn't blame him for cursing her. She was happy to spend the past six years by his side. In fact, these past years spent with Yuta were far better than the years she spent alive. She was so much happier being with Yuta constantly. Rika was always careful to make sure Yuta was safe. She protected him from all the bad people in this world who wanted to hurt him. She loved Yuta so much. She wanted to be the only one in this world that Yuta loved.

Then, she finally met Hiyori. Rika wanted to hate Hiyori because Yuta loved Hiyori more than he ever loved Rika. Just because her soul was tethered in the body of a cursed spirit, and everything she saw looked hazy like a dream, didn't mean that she was blind. Rika saw the way Yuta looked at Hiyori like she scattered the stars in the sky. Yuta looked at Hiyori like she was his world just like how Rika looked at him like he was hers.

Rika had wanted to hate Hiyori so badly because Yuta was supposed to be hers.

But she couldn't.

Not Hiyori who was kind, sweet, and oh-so caring. Hiyori who treated Rika, even in her cursed spirit form, like she was a person...a friend. Something that not even Yuta had ever done before. Hiyori who was never scared of her. Hiyori who painted Rika's nails and made special treats just for Rika. Hiyori who would shower Rika in random tokens and gifts she thought reminded her of Rika. Hiyori who willingly sacrificed her own health to protect Rika and Yuta from the nasty old men that wanted to hurt them.

Hiyori who was the only one who ever visited Rika's grave.

Rika's soul may have been cursed and tethered to Yuta but she was still dead. She knew when someone paid her respects to her grave where her original body lay at rest. That was the thing about being stuck between the land of the living and the afterlife.
