saiouma

The two men appeared out of nowhere, a few yards apart in the narrow, moonlit lane.

"Koichi Saoma," Shuichi hissed, his eyes narrowed in distaste, "We finally meet."

"No, we meet again," Kokichi said with a cocky grin. Slowly he stepped out of the shadows, letting the moonlight wash over his porcelain features. Giddy with anticipation he watched for recognition to dawn upon the other's face.

The gears churned in Shuichi's mind as he tried to decipher what the other meant. There was a nagging sense of familiarity. However, his heart shrouded with suspicion pushed that aside for the sake of his biased rationalization. There could have been someone else he knew with a similar face, their words were a taunt. "You lie," he declared with utter conviction. They were mocking him, he was sure of it. For six months he has been searching for the mole in his organization. Only now has he been able to find them, yet they claim to have met him before.

"I lie no more than you," Kokichi laughed, "God, I can't tell if you're making a fool of me or of yourself. To be fair, what did I expect? The only way to get your attention is to threaten your standing in this world. However, I told you didn't I?" he asked with a swagger in his steps.

Shuichi stood still as the other advanced forward. There was a sense of unease at the other's eerie grin. However, he refused to display his fear. "Told me what?" he asked as fearlessly as possible. Shuichi refused to move an inch, refused to cower. He was the most powerful man in the country, second to only his fiance. They could come as close as they like, but he will not fall. However, unknown to him, that ego of his already led him dangerously close to his downfall.

Kokichi's smile stretched wider across his face as a dangerous glint surfaced in his eyes. "That I'll do anything to get your attention, even if that means I have to strangle you."

Warning bells sounded in Shuichi's head. Suddenly, the words ticked together in his head. A rush of memories flooded his mind as the blood drained from his face. "Kokichi?" He messed up, he knew deep down in his gut. Step by step he scampered backwards until his back hit the wall.

"About time," spoke Koichi, now revealed to be Kokichi. They yanked the other close, trapping them against the wall. "Here I thought I would have to beat you halfway to death first." His spare hand reached into his pocket.

Shuichi's hands trembled with terror as he forced a grin onto his face. "This must be another one of your lies--" A flash of red and a glint of metal was all he could see before it plunged down. Navy locks fell to the ground as he turned his head. Silently swearing, he stared at the knife. "What, what do you think you're doing?" he stuttered out.

"Helping you admit the truth." He yanked the knife out of the wall. "Now, tell me what do I need to do to prove my identity?"

Shuichi's tongue felt heavy in his mouth. "The engagement ring," he cried, eyes never leaving the knife.

Reaching around his neck Kokichi pulled out a diamond ring. "Satisfied."

His gaze darted from the ring to the knife for a few seconds before he settled on studying the ring. After a few minutes, he nodded in confirmation. His cheeks flushed a rosy red as his heartbeat echoed in his As much as he loathed to admit, it their rings were one of a kind and impossible to forge. "I...apologize," he muttered. The words felt foreign in his mouth. This was humiliating for him. However, he accepted his mistake.

Kokichi leaned back with a triumphed smirk. Pushing his hair out of his eyes, he cast a glance around their surroundings. "I'm not going to kill you, nor am I going to end our engagement. No, your parents begged too hard for me to do that. The terms of our agreement are also quite appealing." Kokichi's icy hands smoothed out Shuichi's hair as he sagged in relief. He hadn't even considered that outcome. "However, even if it's arranged I don't like being ignored." Cocking his head, he stared at

Shuichi stared at them dumbfounded. Did they have a few screws loose? "A date," he repeated in sheer disbelief.

"Yes." With that, they left.

Shuichi sank down to his knees the minute they were out of sight. Sighing he couldn't help, but wonder what kind of man his parents made him marry. With shaky hands, he clasped his heart. He could feel his racing heartbeat as the other's words rang in his ears. Quietly he asked himself another question, "Is this love?" The answer came to mind without any question. Then he asked his last question to the night sky. "Should I bring roses next time?"
