“Don't tread on me.” Christopher Gladsden
The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you. Romans 16:20
Recalcitrant: “having an obstinately uncooperative attitude toward authority or discipline” New Oxford American Dictionary
As Christians it can become easy to victimize ourselves. After all the sermon on the mount blesses the meek and poor, it instructs us to turn the other cheek and go the extra mile. But I don't think Jesus wishes us to be victims of anyone. Rather He wants us to be empowered through Him and He doesn't condone us treading on anybody. There is a balance to everything, throughout the Bible you can read texts about moderation. And so it is with strength. We are not called to be recalcitrant, Jesus says, “render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's,” but we are not to be cowards either. Remember Jesus defended the Temple from the money changers and He is continuously rebuking the devil. As Christians it is our responsibility not only to turn the other cheek to avoid unnecessary conflicts but also to defend what is right, sacrifice our welfare to protect our neighbors, and with the help of our Maker crush the devil.
