Jack was playing cards with Race, one thing that he was glad hadn't changed too much, when Medda called for him.

"Yeah, Miss Medda. You called me." He stopped a few inches in front of Medda.

"Jack, this is Officer Jones. He wants to talk to you."

Jack looked at the police officer before looking back at Medda. "Why? Did I do something wrong?"

"No, you haven't done anything wrong, sweetie. He's going to help us see if we can find your parents," Medda explained.

"But my parents are dead. My father died when I was five, that's when I joined the Newsies, and my mother left after I was born."

The officer looked at Medda. "I'll talk with him," he said. "See if we can figure out what's happening."

The officer motioned for Jack to sit on the couch.

"So, Jack, right?" he started. Jack nodded in response. "Can you tell me your full name?"

"Jack Kelly," Jack said unsurely, looking over at Medda. "Why?"

The police officer scribbled something down in the notebook he held.

"We're just trying to find your information on our database," he explained. "Do you know which hospital you were born in?"

Jack shook his head. "I wasn't born in a hospital. My mother gave birth to me in the apartment."

"Do you know where that is?"

"No, she left and we couldn't keep up rent and my father got fired so we moved."

"What was your father's name?"

"Francis Kelly. That's why I changed my last name. I ain't my mother's son. I'm my father's."

"What was the name you were born with?"

Jack looked over at Medda, trying to convey to her how much he hated the conversation. "Why does it matter?"

"We just want to see if you have any other family."

"I don't," Jack stated. "They're all dead. And I ain't gonna talk to you anymore."

Jack pulled his legs up into his chest and turned so he was no longer facing Medda or Officer Jones.

Medda moved across the room and crouched in front of Jack and placed a hand on his. "Sweetie, I know this isn't easy but it will be easier if you try."

Jack nodded and lay his head down on his knees looking at Officer Jones.

"My birth name was Francis Sullivan. I was born in October 1882, I dunno the date, in New York and my mother's name was Mary Sullivan and my father was Francis Kelly."

Medda tightly help Jack's hand as he started to get choked up at the thought of his father.

"Thank you, Jack. I'll bring the information to the station and see what I can do."
