Blink sighed and shoved the tray of food away from himself. There was something about the cafeteria food that made him feel like he was going to die after eating them. Physically feel like he was dying.

On top of that, he had the added annoyance of being the new kid in the middle of March to make the pain far worse.

"Hey, anyone sitting here?"

Blink glanced up and shook his head. People tended to take chairs from the table he was at when they needed more. It wasn't like he was going to need them. He had no friends and nobody wanted to go near the weird new kid.

To his surprise, the boy who had asked placed a brown paper bag down and pulled the seat out before planting himself onto it.

"I'm Nick, but everyone calls me Mush," the boy said, grabbing his carton of juice and stabbing the straw into it. "You're new here, right?"

"Um, yeah, I just moved here last week," Blink mumbled.

"Nice. Where'd you live?"

"Oh, just a couple blocks away. Right by the community theatre."

"No way. I've got some friends who live near there too," Mush said, a smile on his face as he took a sip of the apple juice. "What've you got after lunch?"

"Bio, I think. In the lab," Blink said slowly. "Dunno where that is though."

Mush waved his hand in the air. "I'm in the same class. I'll show you."

"Thanks. But you don't have to sit with me for all of lunch, I'm sure you've got lotsa friends."

"Nah, I'm happy here." Mush picked up his sandwich and took a large bite. "What's your name, by the way? Forgot to ask."

"Louis."

"Nice."

Blink just hummed in agreement. Mush didn't make anything of Blink's lack of enthusiasm to keep the conversation going. He just presumed the boy was shy.

The bell rang out through the school and Blink found himself looking around for a clock.

"Five minute warning," Mush explained. "To remind us to get a-moving."

He stood up, crumpling up his paper bag and swinging his bag on the back. Blink followed suit, carrying his tray over to a bin and dumping its contents before leaving the cafeteria with Mush.

"You okay?" Mush asked, noticing how the food on the tray had barely been touched besides a few nibbles. "You didn't eat much."

"Oh, yeah, no. I'm fine. Just 'cause I was nervous or whatever. Wasn't hungry."

"Alright, come on."

Mush led him through the school to a part he was fairly certain he'd never seem before. He wasn't at all panicking. The pain in his stomach had only gotten worse and he was following an admittedly cute boy around blindly. What had his life come to?
