Tyler and you had been friends for half of our lives. You met each other in high school. He graduated before you did, but he always stayed in touch. Even all through college. The thing was, you had a huge crush on Tyler since you first met. Of course, you were now 32 and he was a married, 35 year old with a couple of kids. The two of you had fallen out of touch in the last several years.

You had resigned yourself to the fact that your friendship would never evolve into something more. It was a secret you kept buried deep within, hidden away like a cherished treasure never to see the light of day. Yet, there were moments when you couldn't help but wonder what might have been if fate had played a different hand.

One crisp autumn afternoon, as golden leaves danced in the wind, you found yourself strolling through the park lost in a sea of your own thoughts. The sun cast long shadows on the path ahead, mimicking the doubts that lingered in your heart. Then, out of nowhere, there he was – Tyler, standing by the edge of a tranquil pond, his children running around him with joyful abandon.

A pang of bittersweet longing washed over you as you observed him from afar. His laughter filled the air, blending harmoniously with the symphony of nature's melodies. It was as if time had stood still, and for an instant, all those unspoken words. It wasn't long before our eyes met and he smiled widely, motioning you to come over.

You hesitated, unsure if you should approach him or maintain your distance. But curiosity got the better of you, and you found myself walking towards Tyler and his children, your heart pounding in my chest.

As you neared them, Tyler's youngest daughter, Emily, broke free from her siblings' grasp and ran towards you with open arms. Caught off guard, you crouched down to give her a warm embrace. Her innocent laughter filled the air, erasing any lingering doubts within you. Tyler approached with a gentle smile, his eyes holding a mix of surprise and nostalgia.

"Hey there," he said warmly, his voice carrying a familiar comfort that resonated deep within you.

"Hi," you replied softly, unable to tear your gaze away from him. Memories of your shared past flooded your mind, intensifying the emotions you had kept hidden for so long.

Tyler's children soon lost interest in your interaction and resumed their playful antics nearby. The two of you were left standing on the edge of the pond. Tyler motioned for you to sit and you did. You sat in silence for a moment, the tranquility of the pond mirroring the calmness between you both. It was as if time had folded over itself, transporting you guys back to those carefree days of your youths, when your laughter's echoed through the halls of our high school and your dreams entwined like delicate vines.

"I never thought I'd see you here," Tyler finally broke the silence, his voice tinged with a hint of wistfulness.

You nodded, unable to find the right words to express the mix of emotions swirling within you. It felt like an ethereal dream, being in his presence once more, yet reality reminded you that you were now two separate souls leading different lives.

"How have you been?" he asked, his gaze studying your face as if searching for answers to questions unasked.

A soft smile tugged at the corners of your lips. "Busy, mostly. Life has a way of keeping us on our toes."

Tyler chuckled softly, a sound that you didn't know you had longed to hear for years. You both fell into deep conversations, Tyler taking the time to make sure the kids were watched after.

He told you about his divorce to Jenna over the last year and how hard it has been on him. They were high school sweethearts, after all. For a moment, your heart swelled three times it's normal size, but you knew you were both still just friends.

But as the conversation continued to flow effortlessly between you two, you couldn't help but notice a subtle shift in the air. There was a certain electricity, a newfound connection that seemed to crackle and dance between your words. It was as if the universe, in all its mysterious ways, had conspired to bring you both together once more.

As twilight painted the sky with hues of pink and orange, Tyler leaned closer, his voice barely above a whisper.

"You know, I've always wondered... What if things had been different for us?"

His words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken meaning. Your heart skipped a beat, catching on the thread of possibility he wove with his question.

"I've wondered too," you confessed, my voice trembling slightly. "But life doesn't always turn out the way we expect."

Tyler nodded, his gaze never leaving yours.

"No, it doesn't. But sometimes, life has a way of putting two people back in touch for a reason."

Tyler and you exchanged numbers, though they were never not the same as they had been all those years.
