Chapter Fourteen (pt. 1.1)

The creature that carried the weight of Zari and Milo kept a steady pace with Ivy and Keegan. Under the natural light, Ivy was able to make out the cozy expression on Zari's face as she held on tight to the back of Milo; as if the berth of the creature alone was not wide enough to prevent her from falling off.

"What are you thinking about?" Keegan asked.

"My family," said Ivy.

"I'm sure they'll be okay."

"Me too," Ivy lied. How could she be sure of anything at this point? There was no guarantee anymore, and the more she thought about it, there had never been any guarantees. Everything in her life had happened because it did, not because it was supposed to.

They rode in silence until Zari noted she was getting sunburned. They set up camp and slept two hours through the blistering temperatures of midday.
