He looked you straight in the eyes, his expression soft but determined and serious. "Laci, I want to go steady with you."

You wanted so badly to say yes, but no matter the ache in your heart, you just turned away. "Chris.. I'm sorry.."

"But- what's the matter?" He moved so that you were facing him again, though you wouldn't look him in the eye.

"Nothing." What a lie.

"Tell me."

"It's just- no," you stopped yourself. "It's nothing. I just can't go out with you, Chris."

His shoulders fell, and he looked hurt. "You don't trust me."

It wasn't that you didn't trust him. You didn't want him to use you. You couldn't risk the heartbreak.

"Laci," he got closer, his voice getting lower, "I would never dream of hurting you. I want to be with you. I need to be with you. Please."

You had been focusing on your hands in your lap but now you looked up. "I promised myself I wouldn't let you complete me," a smile slowly made its way to your lips, "but I'm willing to break that promise, as long as you're willing to never break my heart."

Chris smiled before leaning forward, kissing you lightly. "I'm more than willing."
