''Hey, you..''

Devin turns to face Jeff Atkins and scoffs up a vague smile. As she wipes away a stray tear, she turns back around and mumbles, ''Hey.''

Devin Greene stood in front of the hospital building that Saturday afternoon.

He takes a step forward. ''Are you okay?''

She shakes her head. ''No.''

''Oh.''

It was another moment of silence, other than the sounds in the streets and the doors sliding open and closing to those coming in and out of the facility.

Jeff lingered until he stood next to her. He was eyeing a piece of chewed up gum stuck on the gravel with furrowed brows and asks, ''What was all that about?''

''My mom has ovarian cancer,'' She simply says. But she could feel the tears building up and her throat burning. ''Her condition wasn't so bad. But they found more tumors outside of the ovaries.'' She rolls her eyes. ''I have no idea what the hell that means, but they say it's bad.'' She turns to look at the boy that was already looking at her and pursed her lips. ''I'm scared.''

''She's going to make it through,'' He encouraged. ''She has you and Matt worth fighting for.''

''Ugh,'' She peers away with a groan. ''Matthew.''

''He must be a wreck.''

She licks her lips that were dry against the lingering summer air. ''He hates me.''

''Hey,'' His head hangs to the side. ''He does not hate you.''

She stares off across the street blankly. ''Yeah, he does. And frankly, I don't blame him.''

''Come on, Dev,'' He raised a brow. ''What makes you think that?''

She remained silent. She knew that once Jeff knew as far as to what Matthew knew, he would hate her too. She even hated herself for what she become.

She blinks out of her zoned out state and and looks down at her shoes. ''You should probably go.''

''Why?''

''Just,-'' She turns to him and furrows her brows. ''trust me. The less you know, the better.''

''For who?'' He continues to question. ''For me or for you?''
