''Well? Complete sentences, right?''
Devin Greene couldn't help but smile while typing up an essay on her laptop. She could see Jeffery Atkins through her peripheral vision fidgeting, eyeing Clay Jensen read over his work intensely, hoping for nothing but good feedback.
It was a Monday morning and they were sitting in their third period class, Study Hall, actually focusing on their work for the first time.
She knows that he's been working hard and she knows that he takes his tutoring sessions with Clay very seriously.
''Yeah, totally,'' Clay agrees.
Jeff points at his work. ''I even used a semicolon.''
Devin breathes out a chuckle. It was so adorable to see him trying to impress his best friend with his work.
''I saw that. Mad props.''
Jeff smiles brightly, proud to know that his own grammar was improving.
''I'm just saying,'' He casually waves off.
''Paragraph structure is good,'' He furrows his brows and narrows his red pen down the front page and points at a paragraph. ''You might need some fact checking.''
He cranes his neck forward, his shoulders drooping with disappointment. ''Seriously? I Googled everything.''
''Well,'' Clay looks down at the page. ''the Founding Fathers did grow and use hemp, but it wasn't weed, exactly.''
Devin couldn't believe how genuinely confused Jeff was when he questions, ''Those are different?'' She looks away and bites on her bottom lip. She wanted to laugh, but she knew that there would be a good chance she'd hurt his feelings, as if she was taunting him. So she remained silent.
''Yeah,'' Clay nods. ''Yeah, so James Madison probably wasn't a mad stoner, or, uh, at least not from the hemp.''
Jeff Atkins propped an elbow onto the table and pinch the bridge of his nose, squeezing his eyes shut from frustration. He really thought he had it right this time.
''But it's a good start,'' Clay praises. He passes him back his essay and mentions, ''I marked a few other facts to recheck. Sometimes actual books are more reliable for this kinda stuff.''
''Right, right,'' He nods in agreement. ''Good point.''
Devin shrugs her shoulders. ''On the bright side, babe, you made a lot of progress.''
