''What would you do if your girlfriend was a porn star?''
Clay jerked his head back, his eyes going wide. ''Honestly, I think I would cry every time she came home from work.''
Jeff erupted with laughter. ''Bro, why don't you just break up with her?''
''Because,'' He shrugs his shoulders. ''What if she's the one? I'm gonna have to support her.''
''While her punani is a human trash can?'' Jeff laughs. He shakes his head and asks, ''What would you say, Dev?'' He turns to face the girl sitting across from her that Tuesday afternoon in the cafeteria.
Her chin was resting in her palm while she was staring off across the room.
''Dev?''
''Hmm.''
He looks at Clay, the two furrowing their brows at one another before turning around, finding Hannah Baker with the new girl she had mentioned the day before. Jessica Davis.
''If it's bothering you so much, why don't you just go over there?'' Clay asks as if it was the most obvious solution.
She finally snaps out of it and sits up. ''She didn't invite me to hang out with them. It would feel so weird to intrude like that.''
''But you and Hannah were friends first,'' Shrugging his shoulders, Jeff folds his arms on the table. ''She wouldn't leave you like that after everything you guys been through.''
Devin takes a deep breath and looks back over at Hannah and Jessica, who sat a table together laughing at whatever it was that was so entertaining.
She nods. ''Yeah,'' She looks at the boys and smiles. ''I'm gonna head over there. Let's pray that I won't embarrass myself.''
''I'll pray for something more meaningful for you,'' Clay counters. ''Like for you not to fall on your face.''
''Okay,'' Devin rolls her eyes. ''I'm going.'' She gets up from her seat and makes away across the room, slowly approaching the girls with her hands clasped against her stomach.
''Hey,'' Devin greets, sliding into the seat available next to Hannah.
''Oh,'' Hannah grins. ''Devs, hey. This is Jessica, the new girl I mentioned yesterday. Jess, this is Devs.''
Jessica smiles at her and nods. ''Nice to meet you.''
