space AU. reader is a 'space siren': a mermaid-like creature that 'swims' among the stars and can travel at any speed, any time. there also may be no air in space, but yes, they can talk to each other and also to the humans via the mind (they're magical don't forget that--)

they do not get human things such as windows and buildings and all that (they also don't know humans are... well, 'humans')

Your POV

Space was a wonderful place. It was limitless to our imagination. Creatures lived in galaxies near and far, in the darkest depths and near the brightest stars. Us, the space sirens, traveled among stars. We loved finding new galaxies to explore with varieties of planets in them. Our singing voices lured things into black holes and the deepest depths of space, never to be found.

There was one thing that intrigued me the most. This galaxy that held a... habitable planet. The creatures were almost like us sirens... minus the tail, the pointed ears.

Some of them lived in this giant floating creation that orbited their planet. My friend Maria and I were always trying to see who was there. We knew about them; many of us space creatures knew about them. But they didn't know much about us.

"(Y/N)!"

I was looking at the creature's planet they lived on (from very far away... of course). I turned around, seeing Maria.

"Maria?"

"The creatures are out of their station today. They're doing work on it, I believe."

"You want to go look at that man again, don't you? That particularly small one..."

Maria's cheeks flushed pale blue (they're lil space creatures they blush blue okay--). "He seems like quite the individual, (Y/N)."

I only smiled, grabbing Maria's arm. "Let us go then!"

I tugged Maria past a couple stars at my usual light-quick pace. Within moments, their station was in clear sight. I spotted the man Maria was liking through one of the clear glass sections.

Maria and I swam closer and she sighed. "He looks so wonderful! What I would give to be able to talk to him just once!"

I laughed, staring at the large planet. The swirls of white clouds and all the different shades of browns and greens. All the blue as well.

I looked back at Maria. "You know, you can. We have the mind communication."

She shrugged, still staring longingly. "I know... but what if the creatures around him take it the wrong way? If he speaks up..?"

"Then tell him not to? I can't tell you much else, Ria."

"Who knows what I'll do. Oh! Look at them right there!"

"Where?"

Maria pointed to the clear section next to the man's. It looked like they were talking. "Right there!"

"Oh! Right ther-- Oh my..."

I found myself unable to look away. The sparkle of their eyes. The bright smile. I was yanked out my trance, literally, by Maria pulling me out of sight.

"Almost got caught by both of them!" she teased.

It was my turn to finally laugh. "I didn't think I'd catch myself looking at one of them in... that way.. but look at them! They look so wonderful!"

"Who's the captivated one now?"

I hit her arm. "Be quiet, Maria."

Maria giggled. "Now you're just like me... Why don't we catch their attention with a little song?"

"As long as it's not the luring one. I don't want these creatures meeting a black hole."

She nodded. "Fair enough. I don't either."

Maria clasped her hands together, and I did the same. "Let's do it!"

"Is that singing?"

I looked at Alex, who also looked around, puzzled. "Yeah, it is! But... who?"

I shrugged. "It's not any of the girls..."

He nodded. "Yeah. One voice is so... sultry.. and the other--"

"--is sweet," I finished.

"Yeah! I didn't think that would sound so wonderful together... That sultry voice though... it's so stunning."

"It is... but I think that sweet one is beautiful."

Alex looked at me. "Do you think--? No... maybe?"

I tilted my head. "What?"

"Space sirens. They're supposed to be a myth. Their songs are used to attract, but some songs can send astronauts to their graves by black holes and never-seen corners of space. Their beauty is also supposed to match their tone."

"After this, they don't sound like a myth to me," I spoke, keeping quiet a moment to listen.

After a couple more beats, they stopped singing.

Alex chuckled. "We've been spared. I think those shadows we spotted might be a clue."

He looked at me. "We should find out who they are."

I nodded. "Let's do it."
