Third Person POV

Rowing across the Hudson to Weehawken, New Jersey, proved to be quiet. The day of July eleventh had barely begun, but it would be short for one of them.

The dueling ground was also silent. It was simply Alexander Hamilton, Nathaniel Pendleton, Aaron Burr, William P. Van Ness, and a doctor Alexander knew. No one else. No one more, no one less.

Alexander studied the terrain. He wished he was back home, with his beautiful wife and wonderful kids. But there he was.

Burr studied Alexander instead. He wanted to know what he was thinking, and all Burr could think of was negativity. Alexander poisoned his political pursuits... but most disputes die and no one shoots... right?

Burr watched as Alexander drew first position, looking around the dueling ground. He knew Alexander was a soldier, a soldier with a marksman's ability. Then he watched the doctor turn around to have his deniability.

Scanning the area, Alexander felt a broken feeling in the pit of his stomach. He'd recognize the area anywhere. They were in the very same spot Philip was shot. Where his son, his son, Philip Hamilton, who never hurt a soul, died.

Burr wondered if that was why he fiddled with the trigger of his pistol, why he examined it the way he did. He was silently confessing to the world. He was a terrible shot. So people could tell.

Both men watched as their seconds walked up; their last chance to negotiate.

Taking one last look around, Burr noticed Alexander had his glasses on. But why?

Was it to take deadly aim? Something flickered inside of Burr. It's him or me, the world will never be the same. He only had one other thought. This man will not make an orphan of my daughter. (but what abt alex's 6 kids huh? eliza may still have been alive but you still suck in that case, burr)

They got into position.

Look 'em in the eye, aim no higher.

Summon all the courage you require. Then count.

The world seemed to freeze around Alexander as he turned, simply met with the sight of Burr's pistol aimed right at his chest.

I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory. Is this where it gets me, on my feet, sev'ral feet ahead of me? I see it coming, do I run or fire my gun or let it be? There is no beat, no melody.

Alexander simply saw Aaron Burr. His first friend, his first enemy. If he threw away his shot right then and there, was that bullet his legacy?

Legacy. What is a legacy?

It's planting seeds in a garden you never get to see.

I wrote some notes at the beginning of a song someone will sing for me. America, you great unfinished symphony, you sent for me. You let me make a difference, a place where even orphan immigrants can leave their fingerprints and rise up.

Alexander's dark eyes were wide with realization. I'm running out of time, I'm running, and my time's up. Wise up, eyes up.

He catches a glimpse of the other side.

He sees John Laurens, leading a soldiers' chorus on the other side.

He sees Philip on the other side. His mother on the other side.

He sees Washington watching on the other side.

Teach me how to say goodbye.

Rise up, rise up, rise up, Eliza...!

It feels like a breeze. Eliza's beautiful silhouette stands in front of him, blocking his enemy from sight. He only sees his wife. His beautiful, trusting, forgiving, caring wife, Elizabeth Schuyler-Hamilton.

My love, take your time. I'll see you on the other side.

There's another breeze as she fades, and another that brings no one into his sight. But he feels something brush against his back.

Alexander looks back, finding a faded Laurens looking at him with a saddened smile and hazel eyes. John's gentle voice travels around Alexander as they both speak the same thing.

Raise a glass to freedom.

And just like that, Laurens is gone. And Alexander aims his pistol at the sky only seconds later as time whips back to life.

"Wait!"
