Chapter 23

Previously: She looked up slightly, and I froze as her eyes seemed to land on me. Nate started to turn around, and it was then that I realised that I was still standing here, at the same spot. A spot where Nate would be able to see me clearly once he turned around. A spot where Kelly's eyes were trained on. I tried desperately to move, but my legs just wouldn't obey me at that moment. Shit.

Nate followed Kelly's gaze, a puzzled look on his ruggedly handsome face. I felt my heart thump loudly, blood rushing through my head like crashing waves, and the rest of the world seemed to drain away. My feet were glued to the spot, and I just couldn't tear my eyes away from them no matter how hard I tried. It was as if everything was moving in slow motion. He started to look around slightly, and I could feel my heart palpitating wildly. Shit. My life was screwed. I was gonna be known as the cheap dirty slut from then on. I might as well hang myself.

"Bryan! Look what you've done! You dropped mom's new flower vase! She's gonna kill you!" A shrill voice pierced through my thoughts, as I looked up to see a teenage girl chastising a boy, whom I guessed was her brother. But that wasn't the point! They were standing right in front of me, effectively blocking Nate's view. I saw my chance and immediately ducked behind a nearby bush. I was probably destined to be hiding behind bushes my whole life, I thought dryly. Fate sure did seem to like playing with me.

I exhaled slowly. Nate probably hadn't seen me. But Kelly... She must have seen me... Right? I slowly raised my head and peeked out from behind the bushes, only to find Nate shaking his head, guilt written over his face. Kelly was clutching on to his arm so tight I was sure his blood circulation had been cut off. I could see her lips moving, with an almost pleading look on her face, but I couldn't make out their conversation.

Nate shook his head, and turned towards Kelly, his lips moving slowly. He had a firm look on his face, and I watched as Kelly's face fell before her eyes hardened. I was stunned for a moment. The first time, I thought Kelly was actually a nice cheerleader. The next moment, she practically transformed into someone fake, someone with evil hidden within her, and I knew she would make one heck of an enemy. And now... I saw nothing but Kelly's raw emotions for a split second. My head felt like it was spinning, and I slid back down behind the bushes. I shouldn't have been so nosy. This wasn't my business. But I couldn't help but feel my heart sink all over again at the thought of Nate kissing Kelly.

That's it, I told myself. I wouldn't let my life crumble or let anyone walk all over me just because of a boy. No way. I could handle being a stripper, couldn't I? I wasn't going to be some pathetic girl pining for some jock that was way out of her league. I was going to be a kick-ass nerd. I grinned at that thought and peered up to check that they were gone.

Then I skipped out of the bushes, and took a deep breath. This is it. Bye, Nate, I threw a fleeting glance backwards, letting my lips curl into a cool smirk. No more beating myself up over a guy who wasn't worth it. Then I hailed a cab and made my way home, forcing myself to just let go of him.

"Hey sexy," Rick shot me a grin, wrapping his hand around my waist.

"Ew, get your filthy hand off me. What do you want?" I playfully smacked his hand off my waist and walked briskly to class. I was surprised he wasn't with Chase or one of the other man whores. I sighed inwardly. I could tell Nate was still avoiding me, but I didn't care anymore. Or at least, that was what I told myself.

"Aww, I'm hurt," Rick clutched his chest dramatically, and I couldn't help but smile at his childishness, before he totally ruined the moment again with one of his snide remarks, "Don't pretend you don't want me babe, 'cos I know you do."

I rolled my eyes at him and attempted to walk faster to get away from him and his ultra big ego. To my surprise, he grabbed hold of my hand just as I was about to enter the classroom, effectively pulling me to a stop.

"So... you free Saturday night?" He asked hesitantly, almost as if he were nervous.

"Yeah, why?"

"Well... There's this newly opened restaurant, and I heard the food there's really good. You um... You wanna on a date with me?"

My heart skipped a beat. Rick Moore, the biggest player actually went out on dates? It practically took all of my self control to stop myself from bursting out in laughter. Upon seeing the constipated look on my face, Rick's thick eyebrows knitted together in a frown.

"What?"

"Nothing. It's just, I never expected you to go on dates!" I burst out laughing, which was met by a scowl on Rick's perfect face.

"Oh fine, I was just kidding. Saturday should be alright," I replied. It should be okay to go on just one date with him right? I mean, Nate was practically ignoring me every time I ran into him. I couldn't possibly be waiting for him forever! One date wouldn't hurt right? Wait. Why should I care about Nate? He had Kelly. I wasn't going to be an old cat lady for the rest of my life just because of him.

"Great! I'll see you Saturday!" Rick shot me a smile before bounding away to his next class. I shook my head in bewilderment. Boys and their mood swings. First Nate, now him. Who knows? Maybe he'll start ignoring me tomorrow. God, they said birds of the same feather flock together.

Well, they sure do.
