ANNE
- Anne, Cole and Diana are waiting for you, are you ready?- the girl heard Marilla say at the foot of the stairs.
- I'm almost ready. I just need to put my shoes on. - Anne answered, feeling a little lazy getting up so early.
It was the first day of school, after harvest time, and Anne was anxious and afraid at the same time. She knew she would have to confront Ruby because of her relationship with Gilbert, and had no idea how she would react, but she couldn't put off that conversation any longer, since she didn't want to keep hiding all the time they were together, because it wasn't fair to Gilbert or herself.
It wasn't going to be easy. Three years of platonic love would weigh between them, and perhaps their friendship would never be the same. In the face of that thought Anne was saddened. She sincerely loved Ruby and didn't want to lose her, but she also didn't want to get away from Gilbert, because he had become an important part of her life and she wasn't willing to give up on the boy easily.
She had to find a way to talk to Ruby without hurting her too much, explaining how things had happened, just hoping that Josie Pye hadn't made up a thousand stories, irreparably ruining Anne's chance to redeem herself with the girl.
She had no intention of breaking her agreement about Gilbert, but she had no way of avoiding it. He had come into her life like a hurricane, completely destroying all the barriers she had built between them, leaving her completely vulnerable to his charms.
- Anne, you're already late. Come down soon, please. - It was Marilla again.
- I'm coming down, Marilla. - She pulled away the thoughts that were making her nervous, grabbed her stuff and ran down the stairs to meet Diana and Cole.
- So we'll have the pleasure of your company today, Cole.- Anne smiled at her friend.
- I thought it would be interesting to visit the school again. It's always enriching to go back to your roots. - replied the boy with the funny look.
- Wise words, my friend. It seems you woke up witty today. May I ask why you were suddenly inspired?
- I think Avonlea's airs leave me like this, especially since I have the company of such beautiful ladies.
- You two are giving me a headache with this exchange of words. So much wisdom at this hour of the morning sounds somewhat indigestible to me. I can't keep up with you two. Can we talk in a normal language for the next few minutes?- complained Diana, looking at each other.
- Come on, Diana, we're just kidding. Don't be mad. Cole and I always talk that way when we're together. - Anne explained, passing an arm around the girl's waist.
- Well, Cole is a talented artist, and you know so much, you've read so many books, he's full of qualities. I feel so common and stupid when I'm around you.
- That's silly, Diana. You're a wonderful girl. - said Cole, stroking Diana's black hair.
- Who says you're ordinary? Did you forget you're an amazing pianist? I'd never be able to play any instrument. I'm too clumsy. - He praised her, Anne.
- Thank you, Anne. Sometimes I feel so mediocre. I hate that feeling. - Diana confessed.
- Don't talk nonsense, you're my best friend and I love you. - said Anne, kissing the girl's cheek. - You and Jerry seem to be getting along. Whenever you can be together. - commented the little redhead changing the subject.
- Yes, Jerry has shown himself to be a very affectionate boyfriend. He calls me mon'amour all the time. Isn't that romantic? - said Diana with her eyes glowing.
