The Story of Bishr the Barefoot
Bishr Hafi (rahimahullah) was from among the great saints. However, initially he used to be intoxicated with wine.
Once he found a piece of paper on the road on which 'Bismillah' was written. He picked it up with love, placed it on his eyes, respectfully applied perfume to it & kept it away with reverence. Then he drank some wine & slept away.
In the meantime Hasan Basri (rahimahullah) was inspired that he should give glad tidings to Bishr Hafi & bring him out of the tavern.
With the command of اللَّهُ Subhana wa Ta'ala , Hasan Basri went to the tavern. The people looked at him astounded & asked him what the matter was. Why did he come to the tavern?
He replied, “U people are correct but I have not come here on my own. اللَّهُ Subhana wa Ta'ala has sent me to fetch Bishr Hafi. Therefore tell me where he is”
The people pointed out Bishr Hafi who was lying down in a stupor. Hasan Basri went to him & saw that he was in a state of negligence & intoxication. He somehow managed to revive him & take him away.
When he has completely recovered, he conveyed the glad tidings of اللَّهُ Subhana wa Ta'ala to him. A sound from the unseen was heard,
“O Bishr, you respected My name. Therefore I increased ur honour.
You purified My name & applied fragrance to it. I have purified u of sins as a result & applied My fragrance to you.”
In this manner, in a few moments he changed from alcoholic to a perfect Wali. Glory be to Allah! What mercy He has. By respecting the name of Allah, He granted him admission to the group of the Auliya.
The mercy of اللَّهُ Subhana wa Ta'ala does not require any excuse
while the power of اللَّهُ Subhana wa Ta'ala requires an excuse.
This was in reality the favour of اللَّهُ Subhana wa Ta'ala otherwise what power does man have?

WHEN WE RESPECT & VENERATE ALLAH SUBHANA WA TA'ALA, HE WILL
LIFT US TO GREAT HEIGHTS.
Even if we feel we are far from اللَّهُ Subhana wa Ta'ala , none of us should ever consider ourselves a write-off. اللَّهُ Subhana wa Ta'ala, the Most Merciful & Compassionate gives us all types of chances to delete all our sins.Look at the example of Bishr Haafi.He came from a history of being an alcoholic, a drunkard who used to fall asleep in a drunken stupor in the bar but just because he paid respect to the name of اللَّهُ Subhana wa Ta'ala, he was forgiven & اللَّهُ Subhana wa Ta'ala made him into a saint .
