I sit next to my husband, watching our children open their gifts. We were visiting Mark's mom for Christmas, as we do every year (Sorry if you don't celebrate Christmas). Our kids, our twin boys Ben and Erik, and our daughter Charlotte, love coming to see 'Grandmaiplier' more then life itself. They are family kids. We never had to visit my family, so it works out. We don't talk.

"Kids, try not to make to much of a mess!" I remind them, despite knowing they won't listen. "They'll be fine. They're just excited. They get to see my mom, it's Christmas, the snow." Mark lists. "The snow! I can't wait to get my hands on it." I exclaim like a small child. "As long as there are gloves on those hands." He says, pecking my lips. "Ehh, we'll see." Ben picks up a small box, and brings it over to me. "Mommy, this one is for you from Daddy. We went with him to get it!" He says excitedly. Erik and Charlotte tun away from their presents for the moment to see. I look over at Mark with a half glare half smile look. "Oh really? Thank you. Lemme see what it is."

I take the colorfully wrapped gift, removing the paper to see a jewelry box. I open it, finding a copycat necklace of the butterfly one my grandmother had. She was buried with the original one, but I loved the thing, and it had been seen in photos with her. My grandmother was the only family I cared for, and cared about me. I start tearing up a little. "Oh god, Mark, it's gorgeous." With a wide smile, I kiss Mark. Our kids collectively groan with an, "ewww!" I laugh a little, never takin my eyes off the necklace. It's a purple butterfly, with ice blue tips, the body covered in little black rhinestones. "Daddy said it was like your grandmas." Charlotte points out. "Yeah. Yeah it is."

"Why don't we ever see your mommy? Is she like Grandpa?" Erik asks. I stiffen, looking at Mark nervously. I start tearing up again, but not in a happy way this time. The painful memories, the gruesome feeling, the horrible smells. It's all floods back for a moment. My voice cracks as I speak. "No...No, but I don't talk to her. Or my father. They aren't really your grandparents like Grandma because they aren't really my mommy and daddy." I explain as simply as I can. "Why not?" Ben presses. I look at their curious eyes. They seem like they're just being told a story. I look at Marks concerned face. I look back down at the necklace before I finally return my gaze to the kids.

"They hurt Mommy." They beat the shit out of me. "They didn't know how to take care of me." They were always drunk. "They weren't ready for a baby." They didn't want me. They hated me. Resented me. They wanted me to suffer because they thought I ruined their lives. "But Mommy loves you very much, and I will never hurt you guys." The scars, the bruises, the yelling, the smell of alcohol, the hiding, the pain, the blood, the fear. It's all like a horrible nightmare that will never go away. "So never be scared. Now go on, finish opening your presents." The happy mood of the room returns as the smile and turn back. Mark wraps his arms around me tightly, kissing the top of my head. "It's okay. You'll never have to be scared again." He reassures. "Thank you." I whisper, keeping my eyes on the kids. I sigh in contentment. Because Mark and my family make all the broken pieces fit back together.
