The first words that come out
And I can see this song will be about you

I write a few lyrics for a new song. A voice whispering in the wind. Without meaning to, I'm already writing about her.

I can't believe that I can breathe without you
But all I need to do is carry on

I take a shuddery breath. I need to focus. I need to keep moving. But Goddammit it's so hard. She is...was... my whole world, and she...

The next line I write down
And there's a tear that falls between the pages

I don't notice any passage of time until a drop lands on the page. Tears.

I know that pain's supposed to heal in stages
But it depends which one I'm standing on

Why can't the pain just disappear? Why won't it go away? I don't understand? Why did this have to happen? She didn't deserve it. We don't deserve this.

I write lines down, then rip them up
Describing love can't be this tough

I try distracting myself by writing more lyrics, but frustration just boils over in me. I tear the page apart, nearly screaming in tortured agony. It's too hard.

I could set this song on fire, send it up in smoke
I could throw it in the river and watch it sink in slowly
Tie the pages to a plane and send it to the moon

Forget the lyrics, forget the song, forget this career.

Play it for the world, but it won't mean much
Unless I sing this song to you

None of it matters if she isn't here.

I'm dying to show you
This could end happily ever after

It was supposed to be forever. It was supposed to be something greater. Everything was...perfect.

There doesn't ever have to be disaster
And all you have to do is sing along

She's supposed to be here. How did it all fall out of place? I sink into a ball. "(Y/n), come back. Please come back." I sob.

I write lines down, then rip them up
Impossible describing love

It's impossible. It just can't be done. I can't do it.

I could set this song on fire, send it up in smoke
I could throw it in the river and watch it sink in slowly
Tie the pages to a plane and send it to the moon
Play it for the world, but it won't mean much

Five days after my breakdown, I have lines written. But I know what I need to do to make this all worth it.

Unless I sing this song to you

"Hi (Y/n). I know it's been awhile. I...I really miss you. I really need you. But I know you can't be. I came here because there's something I need to do."

I could set this song on fire
Sing this song to you
I could set this song on fire

Sitting in front of the stone, I play the soft melody. Tears stream down silently, but a small smile rests on my face.

Light this old guitar on fire, I'd still hear the notes
Drown the melody in water, I'd still hear its ghost

"I think this song was always meant to be for you. I can't escape if. I can always hear it. Just like your voice."

Sing it with somebody else, but we'd be out of tune
Play it for the world, but it won't mean much

"A part of the song still feels missing. I thinks it's you. But that's okay. I know we'll sing it together one day."

I could set this song on fire, send it up in smoke
I could throw it in the river and watch it sink in slowly
Tie the pages to a plane and send it to the moon
Play it for the world, but it won't mean much
Unless I sing this song to you

"But for now, this one is just for you. Just you. Something only between us. I think I need it to feel connected to you. I know, wherever you are, you're singing the harmony with me."

I could set this song on fire
Unless I sing this song to you
I could set this, I could set this
I want to sing this song to you
I could set this song on fire
Sing this song to you
I could set this, I could set this

I kiss the page of lyrics, setting it on the ground. I light a match and drop it onto the paper. I watch it burn away. "Until we can sing it together, you can have it. I already know it anyway." My voice cracks with my next words. "I love you."
