Rex was back late that night. Ahsoka had commed him, but there was no answer. She was just about to give up when the door slid open and his familiar shape appeared in the doorway, silhouetted by the brilliant neon lights of underworld Corascant.

She was on her feet in an instant, hugging him. He leaned wearily against her, shifting a bag he held under one arm to better hold her.

"What happened?" Ahsoka pulled back and looked up at him. Rex sighed through his nose.

"Long story short, your master kidnapped general Yoda and sent him and R2 half way across the galaxy searching for voices in the high general's head. They're sending the 501st away early because they got tired of his crap. I have been in briefings for the last... seventeen hours?" He mumbled the last part as a question, following his wife into the small apartment. He set the bag on the counter.

"Wait, you're leaving early?" She asked, gripping his forearm tightly. "When?"

"Three days." Rex answered tonelessly. "And they'll want me at the barracks until we leave starting tomorrow morning."

Ahsoka gave a half choked out sigh, pressing into him and ignoring how his armor dug uncomfortably into her lekku. She spat some nasty stuff in huttese about the jedi before kissing him.

"You can stay tonight, right?" She pleaded. Rex smiled ruefully.

"Don't think anything the council or generals said could convince me otherwise." He pressed a kiss to the curve of her montral. She smiled thinly.

"Good." She whispered. Rex pulled away long enough to dekit and stash his armor away before pulling her into a hug. They settled down between the arm of the couch and the wall, much like they had the night Ahsoka had forgiven him.

"I brought some spare changes of clothes for Fives, as well as some extra pairs of blacks." He whispered. "There's also another thing of bacta, some rations, and a '16 in case of emergency."

Ahsoka smiled and kissed him on the cheek. "We'll be fine, love. Fives will watch after me." She promised. Rex pressed his lips together.

"I know. Doesn't mean I won't worry about you." He said quietly. His jaw clenched, and Ahsoka saw he was holding back tears.

"You'll be worried?" She laughed bitterly. "I'm not the one marching into a war zone." She reached up to cup his cheek gently, wiping away the tears as they spilled over. Her own eyes were a little misty too, but she didn't notice.

Rex tightened his hold on her. "Five months, probably more than that too. How are we going to last this long?" He whispered brokenly.

Ahsoka huddled a little closer, trying to commit the press of him against her to memory. "One day at a time, I guess." She replied. "I don't what you to go." She said stubbornly, not caring if she sounded like a youngling. "Or that I could go with you. Somebody's gotta watch your six." She tucked her head into the crook of his neck.

"Dogma can do that just fine." He said quietly. "One day, Ahsoka, the war will be over and you won't ever have to worry about me leaving like this." He promised. Ahsoka nodded.

"Where would we go? I don't want to stay on Corascant forever." She asked. Thinking about the future was easier than thinking about the present.

"I don't know. Onderon, maybe? Or Salucami?" He said thoughtfully. Ahsoka made a face.

"As long as it's not Felucia." She said flatly. "I've had enough of that petri dish." Rex chuckled, a low rumble in her montral.

"Why not? That's where this all started." He said, intertwining his fingers through hers and lifting their clasped hands for her to see. Ahsoka curled her lip up.

"I think that Trandosha would be closer." She sneared. Rex's small smile widened.

"Well, what about there then? The hunting syndicate is gone, there's that tree cave we once lived in, the wookies are nearby if we need any help." He joked. Ahsoka shoved him in the chest playfully.

"Onderon would do just fine, thank you." She spat. Rex laughed a little and pulled her back down.

"Ok. Onderon it is." He agreed quietly.  "Near the capitol?" He asked. Ahsoka shrugged.

"Maybe. I don't want anything too big. A small community would be nice. Maybe on the outskirts of a city so I could work uptown." She murmured, letting herself have a rare moment of daydreaming.

"I could go to work. You could stay home." Rex said quietly. Ahsoka made a face.

"Uhg. Stay home and do what?" She asked rhetorically. Rex laughed.

"Workaholic." He accused with a smile. Ahsoka smiles and pulled herself up to kiss him.

"Takes one to know one." Her smile slipped as she remembered why they were taking about this. Rex sensed her mood change and gave a low sigh, petting her rear lekku gently as she pressed against him.

"I'm going to be ok, Ahsoka. Now that I have something to come back to, I'll fight to get back to Corascant." He said quietly.

"You better, because I am not dealing with a heartbroken tog. Not again." Came Fives's voice from above them, on the couch. "Can you guys shush so I can sleep?" He snapped in mock anger.

"Fives?" Rex asked with a slight growl.

"Yes ori'vod?"

"Shut up and go back to sleep."

"Sir yes sir." He laughed, the couch creaking as he turned over. Ahsoka yawned and cuddled up to him, drawing his attention back to her.

"Sleep sounds good." She murmured sleepily. Rex nodded.

"Agreed."

Rex woke up before she did the next morning. His comm was going off, but it was just Anakin telling him to get back to the temple. Rex scooped up his wife carefully and tucked her back into her actual bed, careful not to wake up the snoring harpy.

He carefully wrote a letter and left it tucked in her uniform's pocket before kitting up. The last person he spoke to was Fives, making him promise to look after her.

"Of course I will. She may be your wife but she's also my sister. I'll take care of her. I promise." Fives said. Rex nodded.

"I'll hold you to that. Take care, vod." He said quietly as to not wake the girls.

And with that, he was gone. Off to fight a war that none of them had chose.
