I found a chair in a corridor and sat down on it, closing my eyes. I stretched my legs out and put them on a chest.

"Eruwen?" Thorin echoed, causing me to open my eyes again.

"Has he made up his mind?" I wondered.

"Not yet," he replied.

"I can see in you that you want to ask me something."

"About Smaug. You never mentioned that you fought against him."

"It was a long time ago. I made this dagger from his tooth," I explained, showing it to him, "The blade is elven, but the hilt is from his tooth."

"It's a beautiful weapon," Balin echoed.

"It cost me a lot of blood and sweat," I explained.

We all three saw the hobbit leave - he declined the offer. I closed my eyes again, and Thorin was talking only to Balin.

"... I'll take any of the dwarves over an army from the Iron Mountains. When I challenged them, they came. Loyalty, honor, a willing heart - I can ask no more," Oakenshield finished.

"You don't have to do that," Balin replied, "You have a choice, you deserve the respect of our people. You have provided us with a new life in the Blue Mountains, a life of peace and plenty. A life that is worth more than all the gold of Erebor."

"From my grandfather and my father, this went to me. They hoped that one day the dwarves of Erebor would return home. I don't have a choice, Balin, I don't."

"Then we come with you."

"My knowledge may come in handy," I interjected, "plus I'd like to finally add Smaug to my collection of defeated dragons."

"Unlike those cowardly elves and King Thranduil."

"Don't talk about him like that!" I said sternly, "He's been through dragon fire himself. He is many things, but he is not a coward!"

"Why do you suddenly stand up for him like that?"

"If I insulted the dwarves, I'm sure you wouldn't like it."
