Flashback

Get out of there! Come back!" They yelled and Meredith hesitated. But she didn't wanna risk her own life. She attempted to run back until it all went wrong and the tunnel collapsed completely. She felt a horrible pain in her back, that was all she remembered

The firefighters started at an attempt to clear the wreckage as soon as possible

"Okay, all we know is there's one woman trapped in a car and a female doctor that's behind

"Mer?" Derek looked around. "Meredith?!"

"Do we have a description?" Bailey asks anxiously as she and Derek were the only ones left on the scene as everyone else was back to the hospital

"A- A blonde female doctor.." The husband said in shock. "My wife- You need to save my wife."

Derek started panicking. Would this be about Meredith? He grabbed his phone and showed the guy a picture of Meredith. The picture he took a few days earlier, Meredith laughing as they were on a hike

"Yeah.. Yeah it's her." The guy nods. "Please- My- My wife-" he cries

"Meredith?" Derek started panicking, running closer, wanting to help the firefighters

"Stay back, Derek!" Bailey ordered although she was in complete panic as well. "Call Dr Webber, tell them we need two more doctors. Preferable Neuro and Ortho." Bailey said as there were two victims left

End of flashback

Derek and Meredith were laying in bed. He was stroking her back and noticed she had fallen asleep. Her accident has haunted him ever since. He carefully lips up her sweater, the awful looking scar made him wince. Many small scars were left as she has quite some cuts but he'll always remember how her spine looked when they took X rays.

They had been thinking about getting kids, they had build a house and their life was going great. That night Carolyn and Christopher would come over to see the house for the first time since it was really finished. But instead they had to renovate the house right away, making it accessible for Meredith. They rented another adapted place close to the hospital and rehab center as Derek didn't want her to stay there overnight, knowing how severe her abandonment issues were and how badly the accident had triggered it. He still remembers that day, and seeing her scar after today's events brought all of that back

Flashback

They eventually had found Meredith, immediately they knew something awful was up. They had seen the curve of Meredith's back, immediately securing her with a spinal board and neck brace

Richard had sent Amelia back to the accident. She was shocked when seeing Meredith was the doctor who got hurt. They loaded her into the ambulance while Callie was standby to help the other woman

Amelia immediately ordered scans to see how bad the damage was, Derek refused to even move an inch away from Meredith. He knew it was bad, he knew it was very bad but he was in denial. Bailey came with them, Richard joining them once they arrived. He wanted the best surgeons ready for Meredith, the girl he saw growing up in the hospital and now she was hurt

"Shit.." Amelia saw the images popping up. "Her spine completely broke in two. Her spinal cord has been ripped apart."

Richard looked defeated, he didn't know what he heard. Meredith would never walk again

"We need to make this as clean as possible. Do you think you can save her spine?" Bailey asked

"I'm afraid we'll have to put in a prosthesis.." Amelia sadly shook her head

They took Meredith to the OR and did as much damage control as possible

Addison, Carolyn, Christopher and Mark had joined Derek in the waiting room. Mark had offered to stitch up Meredith but Richard didn't want him. He was clearly too upset and too worried about his sister in law

Only Amelia was allowed because she was Meredith's best chance.

Carolyn kept rubbing circles on Derek's back, no one of them knew what to say as they were all too affected

It took hours and hours, eventually Amelia came to them, unable to fight the tears any longer. "She's- She's in recovery. But she'll never walk again." She said and started sobbing, Carolyn immediately pulled her in for a hug.

"Thanks Amy." Derek kissed her head and hurried off to where Meredith was.

Carolyn, Christopher and Addison stayed behind to comfort Amelia and hear the medical news while Derek and Mark ran off to see Meredith

"She's.. She's out of the woods." Bailey said sadly. She didn't want Meredith to be on her own so she kept her company

"My Mer-" Derek gasped. He saw the very bulky brace around her torso that kept her from moving her spine completely, even her neck was unable to move

"She had quite some cuts, most luckily didn't need to be stitched. Richard is arranging a room for her so she will be as comfortable as possible, close to the nurses. I'm really sorry Derek." Bailey said sadly and walked off, leaving them to try and take all of this in. Mark had to guide Derek to a chair as he was about to collapse completely

"She can't be paralyzed. She- No." Derek shook his head

"Derek.. her spine broke in half.." Mark said as there was no denying this

"We- No. We're-" Derek shook his head and started sobbing. "Oh Meredith- Oh-"
