Meredith and Derek had dropped off Grace at daycare and made their way over to see Amelia and Link for her evaluation

"Mom invited us for dinner tonight. Can I say we're coming?" Derek asked Meredith

"Yeah." She nodded softly, too nervous to have a real conversation

"Doctor Grey, you can come." The nurse told them and took them for Meredith's tests

Derek had to lift her as she preferred him helping her. She was placed onto the scanner

...

An hour later after a bunch more tests Meredith and Derek were waiting for news. They were currently in the PT room with Meredith's power chair that she used to operate as she couldn't wait to stand up again

"I was thinking we should go to the zoo or the amusement park soon. The girls have been begging to go." Derek told her, holding onto her hand

"Hmm.." Meredith nodded as she wasn't really listening to what Derek was saying

"Mer-" Amelia was the first to walk in, closely followed by Link, their faces blank

"Can I stand up now?" Meredith asked them but immediately knew something was up. "What's wrong?" She asked

"Mer.. Your bones aren't strong enough, not even to do it supervised. If we let you stand the risks for injuries are way, way too high." Amelia started explaining

"B-But-" Meredith muttered. "I worked so hard.. I-" She shook her head, not believing what they said

"Sorry Mer, you'll never be able to stand again. The surgery made you lose all bone stability. You will have to stop operating and stop standing up." Amelia told her, a tear escaping her eye as she had to tell her sister

Derek wrapped his arms around Meredith as she started sobbing. He lifted her up and placed her in his lap, holding her tight in a try to comfort her

"We'll leave you. Call us if you have any further questions. I'm really sorry." Link said and left with Amelia

Derek and Meredith sat there for a while longer, neither of them realized how much time had passed by until he realized their family was waiting for them

"If you want we can ask mom to watch the girls. We can go home and just.." Derek said but had no idea. Nothing would make her feel better right now, she just lost the ability to stand, her career as a surgeon was completely over

Meredith just sat there, staring ahead of her. "I think I want them home with us." She muttered

"You wanna sit here a little longer?" He asked her, feeling her shivering

Meredith just shrugged. Derek placed her back in her wheelchair and put her jacket on, he then pushed her out of the hospital to their car as she wasn't responding at all

Derek didn't pay attention to their surroundings, he just wanted her in their car, warm and safe and away from all the cruelty in the world

Derek drove them to his parents' house, his hand linked with Meredith's. He parked the car, helped her out and together they made their way up to the front door

"Hey. We were wondering where you were.." Carolyn said sadly. Derek had a feeling that Amelia had called them

"Are the girls in the playroom?" Meredith asked

"Emma is, Grace is asleep." Carolyn told her, pulling her in for a hug first

"I'll check on her." Meredith muttered and quickly wheeled off. Derek was still standing there until his mother pulled him in for a hug and led him inside

"How is she taking it? Amy called us, I'm so sorry, Derek." Carolyn said, his dad ready to hug him

Meanwhile Meredith wheeled into the playroom, seeing Emma play quietly with her dolls

"Mommy!" Emma smiled and hurried to hug her mother

"Em-" Meredith couldn't compose herself any longer and let tears stream down her cheeks as she cried

"Mommy, is everything okay?" Emma noticed something was up

"I need to talk to you, sweetie." Meredith said, drying her own tears

"Okay." Emma nodded, sitting down on the chair next to Meredith

"Auntie Amy checked my bones today if they were strong enough so I can stand again in my super power chair." Meredith started explaining, using the nicknames that had been growing over the years. "But turns out it's not, which basically means I gotta stay seated. I need to use this chair and-" Meredith said having to compose herself

Emma noticed her mother getting emotional and squeezed her hand again, the little girl was smart enough to understand all of this

"I gotta be a little more careful." Meredith ended, kissing Emma's head softly

"Then can you still be a doctor?" Emma asked curiously

"I can. But no more surgery." Meredith explained

"But you can still help people." Emma shrugged her shoulders and carefully got up to hug her mother, a bit careful as she didn't wanna injure her mother

"Don't worry, sweetie. I won't break." Meredith saw how careful Emma was and pulled her a bit tighter, hugging for a while

"Nana said she'd make your favorite." Emma whispered, not sure if it would cheer up her mother

"Really? We should go take a look. Isn't that your favorite as well?" Meredith asked, drying her tears a final time

"Yep!" Emma smiled softly. "I love you, mommy." She whispered

"I love you too, monkey." Meredith kissed her daughter's forehead and together they returned to the others. Christopher immediately hugged Meredith, followed by Carolyn before they had a quiet dinner, Grace eventually waking up and keeping them all busy
