"Richard, I don't know!" Meredith said, pushing with her hands on her leg to keep herself upright as she was completely exhausted, Derek softly rubbed her back
"What about security cameras?" Derek asked, knowing his wife really needed to lay down
"They're checking them out now." The lady told them
"Sorry, my wife needs to lay down. So either you follow us to her office or you let us go home." Derek said
"You can go home." The woman said to them. "Can you come in tomorrow? Hopefully by then we have more news so we can discuss everything."
"We will. Thank you." Meredith nodded and unlocked her brakes, Derek started to push her out of the hospital to their car. He lifted her inside and reclined her chair a bit so she'd be able to lay down while he drove them home
"Take a nap." He said softly. "We'll be home soon."
Meredith nodded and closed her eyes, unable to actually sleep as she kept thinking about what had happened.
Derek kept his hand on her hand, not wanting to let go except when he had parked the car. He got out and helped Meredith out
"Derek? Meredith?" Carolyn walked up to them
"Mom." Derek sighed
"What happened?" She frowned as she had watched Emma
"I'm going to bed." Meredith said and wheeled inside. "Thanks mom for watching Em." She muttered
Derek sighed once Meredith disappeared inside. He quickly explained the situation to his mom. Carolyn decided to head home so Meredith and Derek could be together after everything
Once Carolyn was gone Derek went inside to make them something to eat.
"Mer?" He whispered as he entered their bedroom but he got no response. He placed down their plates and looked in the bathroom, nothing
He then went to Emma's room where he saw his wife half asleep next to their daughter
"Hi. Can I carry you to our bedroom?" Derek asked quietly
"Yeah." Meredith nodded. Derek carried her to their bedroom and handed her the plate of mac and cheese. "Thank you." She said as she looked at her husband. "Sorry. I just needed some time."
"Don't apologize. But don't worry too much. You didn't give that blood. You didn't order it." He kissed her head. "Eat, then you can go to bed." He kissed her cheek
"Kay.." Meredith whispered and ate in silence
...
The next day Meredith was getting a little more comfortable. She knew Derek was right. She knew she had nothing to do with what happened
Right now they were on the way to the hospital as they first had an appointment with Addison, to check her blood and see if she was actually pregnant or not
"Should we stop by at Richard first?" Meredith asked
"Let's go see Addie first." Derek smiled and they made their way over to the OB floor
"Hey guys, I heard about it." Addison sighed and took a blood sample from Meredith. "I'll come find you as soon as I have the results." Addison promised them
"Let's hope for the best.." Meredith muttered and placed her hand on her stomach
"It might be a bit early. We can check again next week and in the worst case we try another round of IVF." Addison tried to comfort her sister although deep down she remained hopeful
Meredith nodded. She had always been very realistic so she wasn't hoping too much but still if she thought about having another baby in her belly, a baby that they'd hold in there arms, that would run through their garden with Emma in some months then she had to admit that was all she wanted.
"Let's go check in on the investigation. But first-" Derek said and kissed her, his hand on mer stomach, which she couldn't feel, he gave her a long and steady kiss
"I love you." Meredith said and moved her hand to her stomach, only now noticing Derek's hand. She squeezed it and together they made their way over to the conference room. The door was open and they saw several people talking and busy on their computers
"Meredith! Derek!" It was Richard who spotted them, they had never seen him this serious
"Hi Richard." Meredith breathed
"Come take a seat." The female lawyer said and guided them to the table, looking a bit impatient as Derek removed one of the desk chairs for Meredith so she could wheel under the table.
"What's so urgent?" Derek asked, his hand on Meredith's
"We can't find any footage. We're still wondering who did this. Dr Grey, an you repeat your story please?"
"My story? About the last time I was with the patient?" She asked, clearly not liking how they treated her
"Yes." The lawyer looked at Meredith
"So I went to the patient's room-" Meredith started
"Some say you were yawning and look tired." The lawyer interrupted
"I was yawning but I wasn't exhausted. I did many 24 hour shifts back in the days." Meredith said sternly.
"You're recovering from spine surgery?" The lawyer interrupted again
"I'm over a month post-op. I waited until I was completely ready." Meredith felt Derek squeeze her hands as she was getting worked up
"But you're still in a wheelchair? And this happened on your first day back." The lawyer said again
"I will always be in a wheelchair. That surgery was to change the screws and plates in my back because they broke off. I will never walk again." Meredith said, being used to saying this by now but it didn't mean she's used to people making assumptions
"Continue please." The lawyer nodded
Meredith took a deep breath and continued.
"I ordered the plasma through the tablet. Nurse Linda changed it and left. It was the bag of plasma that was disconnected to the patient and was changed by a bag of blood. The plasma was still there. After she left I updated the patient's charge. A neurocheckup had to happen, which was done by one of Dr Shepherd's residents and then another nurse entered to empty the patient's catheter bag. And then I left to do the same." Meredith said
"You emptied his bag?" The lawyer frowned
"No. I emptied mine. I don't need to take breaks from surgery to pee." Meredith scoffed. Both Richard and Derek had to keep themself from chuckling at Meredith's sarcasm
I HAVE AN EXAM TOMORROW
and instead of studying I decided to finish and upload this chapter first! Tomorrow I also have PT so no idea if I'll upload or not but I hope!
