It's the day of the egg retrieval. Meredith was getting herself dressed in comfortable clothes she had put ready the day before
"Mer, you're sure your bag is ready?" Derek walked inside to room to carry her bag to the car
"Yeah. I just need a second pair of compression socks. I'm wearing a pair now as well." She explained, putting on her socks
"I'll grab them. Emmie's bag is ready as well." Derek said and placed a soft kiss on her hair. "Hmm.. Lavender." He winked
Meredith chuckled at her silly husband and put on her sneakers. She then got into her wheelchair and wheeled off to the kitchen.
"Mama! Breakfast is ready!" Emma smiled
"Mommy can't have much now. She'll have a smoothie." Derek said and passed it to Meredith, along with her meds
"Your pancakes look much better than mine." Meredith winked at her daughter
"Mama, you want a bite?" Emma whispered
"No bean, I'm really okay." Meredith smiled widely
"Otay." Emma nodded and kept eating while Meredith drank the smoothie
After a while they all got ready and into the car, first driving to Carolyn and Christopher's house to drop off Emma
"Hey guys, are you coming in for a coffee?" Carolyn offered as she saw her son and daughter in law arriving
"Mer?" Derek looked at her
"I can't have coffee but I wouldn't mind to come in for just a little while."
Flashback
"Der-" Meredith looked up at her husband, holding the pregnancy test in her shaking hands. "I'm- I'm pregnant." She said, not believing it
"You are." Derek nodded, checking the pregnancy test. "We-We're getting a baby!" He smiled and lifted her up, hugging her tight
"Easy-" Meredith laughed, holding tight onto him and kissing him several times
Her morning sickness had been rough during the first months. She even had to stay home some days. Luckily their boss was very understanding.
Derek often arrived home to Meredith lying curled up on the couch. He worried about her back and legs and pressure sores but she insisted she would be okay
Eventually it became visible as she had a very round pregnancy belly and didn't mind hiding it. She liked showing what she and Derek had created and what was now growing inside her
"I really like Emma." Meredith said as they were on their way to find out the gender of the baby
"I like that too. And what for a boy?" Derek asked her
"It's a girl. I'm sure." Meredith stated
End of flashback
After they left Emma at their parents they went to the hospital where Addison got everything ready for the egg retrieval. Meredith got slightly sedated while Derek stayed with her and held her hand
"Okay guys, I got 10 eggs." Addison softly smiled.
"That's less than we had hoped for." Meredith muttered to Derek, clearly a bit out of it from the sedation
"But enough shots for us to try." Derek assured her
Meredith nodded as Addison calmed them down by telling all 10 were in good conditions
"We'll prep them as soon as possible so we can start the IVF." Addison told them
Meredith nodded and focussed on her husband as Addison wrapped up, eventually she fell asleep from the meds, only waking up a while later. Mark was sitting next to her, Derek was nowhere to be seen
"Mark.." Meredith muttered, feeling soreness in the body parts where she still had sensation
"Hey Mer. How are you feeling?" He asked her, offering her a cup of water
She sipped the water before responding. "Sore. As if I've worked a 24 hour shift." She complained
"Addie said it could happen. Since your body is clearly responding to what has been happening inside you." Mark rubbed her arm
"Where's Derek?" She eventually asked
"Ma and pa stopped by with Emma after they went out for dinner. They wanted to check on you but since you weren't awake they met at the cafeteria." Mark said
"Can you call them? Ask if they wanna stop by really quick?" Meredith asked Mark, feeling the need to see her family but mainly her daughter who could always comfort her
Mark called them and they said they were on their way
"Any discomfort? I can help you reposition if you want." Mark offered
"No. I'm okay for now." Meredith nodded
"Mer?" Derek was the first to knock on the door, Emma resting on his hip
"Mama!" Emma giggled
"Hey you two." Meredith immediately started smiling widely
"How are you feeling?" Derek walked over to her, immediately starting to worry
"Place Emma down please." Meredith asked, seeing Carolyn and Christopher enter as well. "Hi." She smiled at them
"Hi Meredith." They both said and walked over to her side
"Mama!" Emma cuddled into Meredith's side
"Careful. Your mommy is a little sore." Mark told the little girl
"Congratulations. We heard you got 10 eggs. That's a good shot." Christopher rubbed her head softly
"We hope. Now let's hope they all get fertilized.." Meredith said, clearly scared that'd be a disaster
"It will all be okay." Derek kissed her forehead and saw her eyes flutter. "I think you need some rest."
"Mama, you coming home?" Emma asked
"No monkey, you're staying with Nana and Poppa." Derek told her
"But.. I wanna sweep home." The little girl frowned. "I missed you."
"Derek, go home with her. I'll be okay here." Meredith whispered
"Are you sure?" Derek asked his wife
"Yes, I'll just be sleeping." Meredith nodded
"Is that okay, bean? You and I are going home." Derek told his little girl
"Yes!" She giggled
"Sorry mom and dad." Derek looked at his parents, grabbing his own stuff in the meantime while Emma and Meredith were cuddling
"No worries, son. She missed her parents." Christopher smiled gently
"I'll stay here. Make sure she gets turned around to prevent pressure sores." Mark said as they worried about it. At home she was used to turn herself around but now she was sore and they didn't wanna risk a bleeding
"Thanks Mark." Derek hugged his brother
