Meredith had been napping on the couch for a while. She was exhausted after a full day at home with Grace and Emma. Carolyn had come over to help her out a bit with some laundry and cleaning the house
"Mama!" Grace came running inside
"No Grace, we can't wake mommy up." Emma grabbed her sister's hand
"No! Mama!" Grace escaped and climbed up the couch, jumping next to her mom
"Oh-" Meredith woke up abruptly. "Grace.." She muttered
"Sorry-" Emma hurried closer, not sure what to do
"It's okay." Meredith smiled softly as Emma and tried to push herself into a sitting position
"Mama! Wanna play outside!" Grace giggled
"Well daddy will be home soon and then we can have dinner first." Meredith said
"But wanna pway on the swing!!" Grace jumped up and down
"Grace.." Emma muttered, not sure what to do. "Do I get nana?"
"Oh Meredith, dear! You're awake!" Carolyn walks inside. "Grace, let's give mommy some time to get up while we get some juice." Carolyn took the little girl with her
"How was it with Nana?" Meredith asked Emma as she carefully gets herself into her wheelchair and secured her legs as they have been spasming more frequently since her last surgery
"It was nice. We baked cookies." Emma smiled widely.
"Oh yummy! Did you save some for me?" Meredith playfully winked and followed her oldest daughter to the kitchen
"We did!" Emma giggled proudly
"I made lasagna for you. You can just heat it up." Carolyn told Meredith. "Would you mind if I leave now?"
"Of course not, mom. We'll be okay, Derek will be home soon." Meredith assured her. "Thanks a lot for helping so much."
"No worries, sweetie." Carolyn gave Meredith a tight hug. "We'll see you guys tomorrow."
"Bye nana!" The girls said and gave her a hug
Eventually Carolyn left and Meredith decided to get everything ready for dinner when she received a call
"Derek, hey! Are you on your way?" She asked him
"I'm sorry, there are issues here, I got pulled into surgery." Derek said, mainly to announce she was on speaker for a full OR
"Oh-" Meredith nodded. "I can leave you some dinner, how long will it take?"
"I don't know if i'll be home before the morning." Derek sighed deeply
"We'll manage, Der. Text me if there are any updates. I love you." She said
"I love you too, I'll call back to say night night to the girls. And call mom or Addie if you need any help." He said, feeling some other doctor's eyes on him as everyone had questions about when Meredith would return
Meredith eventually hung up and went to check on the girls.
"Daddy is busy and got pulled into surgery so it will be a girls night tonight." Meredith told them.
"Yay!" Emma smiled widely. "Can we stay up a bit longer?"
"We'll see." Meredith chuckled. "I'll go put the lasagna in the oven while you two go change into your pjs, okay? Nana said she had put them ready for you." Meredith said. "Gracie, I'll come help you in a minute."
Both girls nodded and ran off to their bedrooms
Meredith struggled a bit to lift the plate of lasagna into the oven as it was heavier than she had expected. She put a timer on in case she'd lose too much time to help Grace so she wouldn't burn the food
Eventually she wheeled to Grace's bedroom, seeing Emma's bedroom empty
"We need to be careful with mommy." She heard Emma saying as the girl tried to help her younger sister get dressed
"Why?" Grace frowned
"Cause mommy had surgery. And mommy's legs have an auwie." She explained
"But I caweful!" Grace said
"Just a little more careful." Emma told her sister
"But I wanna sit on mommy's lap.." She muttered
"Then you need to ask mommy, we don't wanna injure her." Emma finished dressing her sister
"Hi girls." Meredith finally wheeled inside, fighting back the tears that were welling up in her eyes
"Mommy!" Both girls jumped up
"Let's go to the kitchen, I'll tie your hair together." She reached out for their hands and they went back to the kitchen. Meredith checked the oven and started braiding Emma's hair first, then Grace's hair
...
Hours later they were laying on Meredith and Derek's bed. Meredith was struggling to stay awake
"Mama, can we watch another movie?" Grace begged
"No. It's really late." Meredith muttered, trying to wake herself up
"Please mommy? Daddy hasn't called yet.." Emma tried carefully
"Maybe a little longer." Meredith nodded softly, wrapping her arms around her daughters
"When's daddy calling?" Grace whined
"Dunno honey. He'll call soon." Meredith said, moving her legs tiredly to prevent pressure sores
"Are you comfortable?" Emma asked, fixing her position into her mother's side
"Yes honey." Meredith kissed Emma's head, then Grace's head and put her head down, almost immediately falling asleep
Emme fixed the blanket a bit after putting on another movie, Grace also falling asleep
After a while Meredith's phone went off and Emma sneaked out of the room to pick up and not wake her sister or mother
"Mer, hi." Derek's voice was heard
"Daddy, it's me. Mommy's asleep." Emma told him
"Hi monkey, I didn't know you were still awake, where is mommy?" Derek asked
"Mommy's asleep with Grace in the bed. When are you coming?" She asked in return
"Oh monkey-" Derek sighed. "I'm still stuck here, probably will be the entire night. Will you take good care of mommy and Grace?" Derek asked
"Of course! I can do that, daddy!" She said proudly
"I love you so, so much. Go to bed, honey. I'll bring breakfast. Be good." He said and they ended the call
