"Where's Derek?" Addison asked as she walked into Meredkth and Derek's house. Mark was playing outside with the kids

"Dunno. He was at the hospital." Meredith shrugged. Lately Derek had been a bit more absent, he came home in the morning and slept some hours only to leave again soon after

"Mommy!" Emma came hurrying inside

"Hey monkey, are you enjoying it?" Meredith asked

"Yeah." Emma nodded and cuddled into her mother's side

"Are you doing okay?" Meredith asked Emma, seeing how the girl froze in her spot

"I'll go check outside." Addison stood up and left them to talk

"Honey, what's wrong?" Meredith asked concerned

"Dunno." Emma shrugged. "It's all so different."

"What's different?" Meredith stroke her fingers through Emma's blonde curls

"Dunno... We never go camping or to the pond to fish. I like the sleepovers but daddy never joins them." Emma said as the girls often climbed in bed with Meredith when Derek wasn't home

"Well we'll ask daddy soon, what do you think? It's just been a bit busy, honey." Meredith hugged Emma tight

"I know." She shrugged but didn't let go of her mom. "When will daddy be here?"

"I don't know, monkey." Meredith kissed Emma's forehead

...

Meredith was a bit annoyed that Addison and Mark had already left but still no signs of Derek. He had called two hours ago to tell her he'd be home soon

"Where's daddy?" Gracie walked inside, clutching her stuffed animal against her chest

"Daddy's coming. Why don't you go lay down in your bed, you can go to sleep." Meredith tried, not knowing when Derek would be home

"But I wanna sleep in your bed." Grace whimpered

"I will ask daddy to come give you a kiss. We can wake daddy up with coffee and ask him to make breakfast in the morning." Meredith smiled widely, really looking forward to spending the day with her family

"Otay.." Grace sighed as she gave in

"Say night night to your sister and pick a book." Meredith said and Grace ran off. "Em, I'll be back in a bit." She kissed her oldest daughter's head

Meredith followed after Grace and helped the girl climb into bed. She grabbed the book and started reading her the night time story

Eventually she quietly left the room as Grace had already fallen asleep.

"Mommy, can we watch a movie?" Emma suggested

"Of course we can, but just one." Meredith nodded.

"Can we get into your bed?" She asked mischievous

"And you will eventually sleep in your own bed?" Meredith teased

"Do I have to?" Emma whined

"We'll see." Meredith chuckled softly. "Come on, let's go get comfortable."

Emma followed her mom to her parents' bedroom and both get in the bed, covering themselves with a bunch of warm blankets

"Perfect, don't you think?" Meredith asked Emma

"Yeah." Emma smiled softly, leaning back against the mattress

"Go ahead and pick a movie." Meredith nodded

...

Meredith was pissed off and waiting in her wheelchair. Emma had been asleep for quite a while in her bed but she wanted to wait for Derek. She had called him earlier and he said he was jumping in his car

"Finally!" Meredith groaned as Derek walked inside

"You didn't have to stay up for me." Derek kissed her lips

"Well.." Meredith sighed. "Derek, when do I ever see you?"

"I'm really sorry, it's been busy and-" He stopped for a minute. "Richard asked if I wanna become chief."

"Chief?" Meredith's eyes widen

If she was honest she would agree in a second but she started doubting that because of how absent he had been

"Mer.. I know it's big news.." Derek sighed and sat down so talking would go smoother

"I want you to get that job, Derek. But you can't forget about the girls, you can't forget about your family." Meredith said, she wanted this to be very clear

"I'm not forgetting about you or the girls.. It's just-" Derek sighed. "I really want this job, and it might take some more time at the start but it gets better, we can do this as a family." Derek promised her

"You need to decide, Der. You're the one who needs to know if it's possible or not." Meredith said softly, stroking her fingers over his arm

"I think I want the job." Derek nodded sternly

"Then let's go to bed so you can see the girls in the morning, please." Meredith unlocked her brakes

Derek went to give Grace a night night kiss first

"Oh- Emma's in our room. I don't know if you wanna carry her to her own bed?" Meredith asked

"I will, so we can cuddle." Derek nodded and went to scoop up his oldest daughter

In the meantime Meredith put on her stretchers on her legs and climbed into bed. She covered herself with the blankets and waited for Derek when anxiety started to hit

What if the job would be too big or what if Meredith would have to rely too much on her other family members for help or what if the girls would miss their dad too much

"Hi." Derek whispered. He climbed into bed, he pulled Meredith in his arms, kissing her neck softly

"You better be right, Derek. I want the girls to be happy at all times." She whispered as she recalled her own childhood

"They will be happy. And eventually you'll return to consulting at the hospital and all will find a routine." He nodded, spooning her

"Hmm." Meredith nodded exhausted. She slowly felt Derek falling asleep but she couldn't turn off her mind as worries kept radiating through her head
