Derek got out of his car and knocked on his parents' front door

"Hi son. Come in." Christopher opened

"Hi dad, how are the girls?" Derek asked as he took off his coat

"Emma and Grace are cooking with your mom. But Meredith's taking a nap." He explained

"Why? Is she in pain?" He frowned, not understanding why they only told him now

"No. She was absolutely exhausted, she's been taking care of these girls on her own, Derek." Christopher sighed

"I know, dad. It's just the start, I'm here as well, I don't wanna risk my family for a job." Derek said

"I know, Derek. But she's been working really hard with PT, two daughters below the age of 10 and you've been absent in the evening. Usually you took turns bathing the girls, you took turns cooking. You can't blame her for being exhausted now she's doing it on her own. Your mother helps her out but we don't wanna force her to ask for help."

"I know, dad." Derek sighed. "I'll go check on her before seeing the girls." He said and took off to his old bedroom. He opened the door and saw Meredith curled up in her blanket, like a burrito being wrapped up

He walked up to her, gave her a soft kiss and fixed the blanket to make sure she was completely covered and then walked out again. He made his way to the kitchen where he could hear his daughters giggling away

"Daddy!" Emma spotted her father immediately and ran up to him

"Hi monkey!" He hugged her tight, then Grace ran at him. He lifted both girls at the same time and hugged them tight

"Mommy's asleep. We're making dinner." Emma told her dad as he placed them down again

"We gotta wakey mommy!" Grace yelled

"No-" Christopher stopped her from escaping. "We'll wait until food is ready, will you and I get the table ready?"

"No!" She pouted

"Grace, we need to get the food ready, do you wanna help me?" Carolyn said, hoping to get the girl distracted

"Grace, mommy needs a little more rest and we need to be good so we can get ice cream!" Emma told her little sister

"Otay.." Grace gave in and walked up to her grandmother

"We'll keep them busy here. Go lay down a little and have a talk." Christopher instructed

Derek nodded and walked out of the room on his way back to his old room

He opened the door and saw Meredith was still laying down in the same position so he removed his shoes and went to lay down next to her, watching how she slept

Until she started stirring and opened her eyes

"You're here.." Meredith whispered, barely able to open her eyes

"I promised. I'm sorry I've been so absent. I- I don't want you to overdo now with everything going on.." Derek carefully started

"Hmm.." Meredith dragged her body a bit closer so she would be in Derek's arms

"I'm sorry, Mer." Derek whispered, kissing her head gently

"I know. But it's been too much. I can deal with Emma, she's growing up. But Grace has so much energy, she runs off so quickly-" Meredith sighed. "I love them but I really need some help and I can't stand to ask mom and dad every single time." Meredith honestly told him

"I don't want you to ask them, you should be able to ask me or me to notice it- I failed. I failed you." Derek sighed

"You didn't fail me, you didn't fail the girls. We love that you got the job, we just gonna have to balance everything." Meredith assured him. "I love you, Derek." She pulled him in for a kiss

"I love you too." Derek whispered

"I'm returning to work on monday but we gotta figure things out with the girls." Meredith said

"You're doing half days, right?" Derek asked her

"Yeah, to start off with." Meredith nodded

"We'll figure things out, Mer. We got this and you're coming back which is absolutely amazing." He smiled proudly
