"Mr Winchester, I'm sorry." The elderly doctor said gently, leaning forward. "It has been confirmed that you have lung cancer."

Sam shook his head sadly. He knew that this was coming. "How long d'I have, doctor?"

The doctor sighed, looking at Sam with pity. "Six months, Mr Winchester. Six months."

Now Sam wasn't expecting that. He gasped, leaping up from his chair in front of the desk. "No. No! You're lying!"

He spotted the paper in front of the doctor. "Those! Give me those!"

The doctor handed Sam the papers, his only reaction to Sam's rude and panicked outburst sympathy. Sam stared down at the words printed there, the paper shaking. No, his hands were shaking. He was shaking.

"There's been a mistake, doctor. There's been a mistake! There's no way I'm dying in six months, there is no way I'll be dead and gone within six damn months!"

The doctor just looked at him with that pitiful gaze of his.

How was Sam going to tell Dean? How?

Sam broke down.

"... I'll be visiting everyday, I'll call you every morning and every night, I'll be texting you all day every day -"

"Dean, I know, okay? I've got it." Sam sighed. "You've said so many times -"

"Oh really? How ma-?"

"Exactly forty-one times."

"You counted? Ner-"

"Don't say it, Dean. Don't -"

"Mr Winchester? Your room's this way." The elderly doctor from yesterday said, appearing from a door to their left.

"See? Told you that someday someone'll interrupt you." The eldest Winchester said teasingly to his little brother, nudging him gently.

Sam looked from Dean to the doctor and back again. The doctor nodded at Sam, silently telling him to take all the time he needed. Sam turned to his brother and patted him awkwardly on the shoulder, something which Dean glared at him slightly for.

"I'll see you, I guess ...?" Sam shook his head and took a step towards his doctor, but before he could take another one, a solid force whumphed into him and enclosed him in desperately tight, warm arms.

Sam turned hesitantly and wrapped his arms around Dean, who mumbled, "I'm going to miss you, Sammy. So much."

Sam smiled, his eyes fuzzing up with tears. He clutched needily at his brother, the tears spilling down his cheeks and onto his brother's jacket. "Don't call me 'Sammy', you jerk."

Dean grinned slightly as they pulled away. "I'll call you whatever I want, you bitch."

Sam shuffled towards the doctor and down the hallway, looking back only once to see his big brother, eyes too bright and smile too forced, alone at the end of the empty corridor.

The doctor finally arrived at Sam's new room and paused at the door. "I warn you, your roommate's a tad ..." He trailed off, a thoughtful expression on his face. "Immature would be the kind way to put it. The not so kind way would be 'clinically deranged'." He whispered the last sentence to Sam, who smiled slightly for the doctor's benefit.
