"Y/N, where are we going?"

You smirked and glanced over at Steve, who sat blindfolded in the passenger seat of your car.

"What did I tell you when we left?"

He sighed disappointedly. "It's a surprise."

"Exactly!" You whooped, hitting your hands against the steering wheel excitedly. "So stop asking questions, please and thank you!"

Steve sighed and you looked back to the road, smiling to yourself. It was the night of his birthday, and as the two of you had been dating for a few months, you felt like you needed to do something big for it. You glanced back over at him and laughed a little.

"What?"

"Nothing," you chuckled. "I-it's nothing."

"No, tell me!"

"It's nothing bad, you just-" you hesitated and chewed on your lower lip a little. "You look adorable."

"Oh, uh, well, thank you?"

You laughed again and shook your head at his modesty. You turned the radio up slightly, bobbing your head along to the music that emitted softly from the speakers. After a few minutes, you turned off the isolated road you'd been driving on and into a large, grassy area. It was getting dark, the only light coming from the moon. You jumped out of the car eagerly and rushed over to the passenger side, where you let Steve out and guided him a few feet away from the car.

"Okay," you grinned and wrapped your arms around his shoulders, putting your hands on the back of the blindfold. "Ready?"

"As ready as I'll ever be."

You untied the blindfold and removed it from his face, tossing it off to the side. "Surprise!"

Steve blinked a few times and looked around. "We're in a field."

"Yes, yes we are," you nodded and went over to the trunk of your car.

You opened it and pulled out a large blanket and a picnic basket, holding them up for Steve to see.

"Y/N, what is all this?"

"It's your birthday! We're celebrating," you explained, spreading the blanket out on the grass in front of you.

You sat down on the blanket and began opening the basket as Steve sat down next to you. You handed him a beer from the basket before taking one for yourself and leaning backwards onto your elbows. He put his arm behind your back and you leaned into him, resting your head on his chest.

"This is nice," he said after a few moments. "You can see stars out here."

You looked up at the sky and smiled. He was right, you could see things here that you'd never dream of seeing in the city.

"It's so peaceful," he added.

"Yeah, we'll see about that."

Steve furrowed his eyebrows together and looked down at you. "What are you-"

He was cut off by several loud booms in the distance and immediately whipped his head around to see where they were coming from.

"Oh my god," he breathed.

Steve's eyes widened at the sight of the fireworks exploding in the sky above you, his mouth gaping open. With each burst of color his face lit up more and more, which only made you happier and happier.

You grinned at him sheepishly. "So you like it?"

"You did this?!" He cried in disbelief, "Y/N, this is amazing!"

"I just happened to know that there's a farm a few miles that way that sets off a pretty kick-ass fireworks display every Fourth of July," you replied casually. "I thought you'd like it. Plus, I thought it would be romantic."

"You thought right," he murmured, bringing you closer to his side.

"Happy birthday, Steve."

"Thank you, darlin." He pressed his lips against your forehead slowly, making your heart flip.

You two sat and watched the fireworks silently for several minutes, both in awe of their beauty. After a little while, they were over, and it had grown completely dark. You scooted forward and laid down on your back, staring up at the stars. Steve did the same, intertwining his fingers in yours.

"Hey, Y/N?" He spoke softly after a few minutes.

"Yeah?"

"Can I tell you something?"

You glanced up and raised an eyebrow at him. "Of course."

Steve hesitated before replying. He swallowed slowly; you watched as his Adam's apple rose and fell. You felt the pulse in his wrist quickening against your own, which made yours do the same.

"I love you," he said finally. "I love you, Y/N."

Your breath caught as he spoke and you quickly propped yourself up on your elbows.

"You love me?"

"Yes?" He suddenly looked extremely nervous. "U-unless it was inappropriate of me to say that. Then in that case I just really like you and-"

"Steve," you cut him off, a grin plastered on your face, "shut up."

You leaned over him and pressed your lips against his, cupping his face in your hands. He sat up and put his hands on your hips, moving you into his lap. He pulled away after several moments and looked into your eyes, his hands now on your face.

"So...how do you stand on the whole love thing?"

You both dissolved into laughter, and you leaned forward so your foreheads were touching. "I love you, Steve."

He exhaled loudly and held you close to his chest. "Oh thank god."

You leaned forward and connected your mouth to his again, more passionately than before. Steve held onto you tightly, gradually taking control of the kiss and pushing his hands into your hair. You pulled back slightly several minutes later to catch your breath and touched his face gently.

"I think I can confidently say that this is the best Fourth of July I've ever had," you whispered, laughing softly.

"I'd second that," he muttered, and the two of you were quickly back to kissing.
