Cheyenne's POV
"How do we know we can actually trust the wolves?" I ask Shane. I still can't beleive he agreed so quicly to work with Lysander and his pack. Especially after everything it turned out that Lysander had been hiding from me all the time that I had been with him. I feel so foolish of my feeble human emotions now . . .
"I never said we could trust them," Shane states. "In fact, I will never trust them."
"Then why did you agree immediatley for us to work with them?" I still don't understand!
"They are our only chance- I mean, Cheyenne," Shane sighs in exasperation. He takes a moment to recollect himself before continueing, "Standing with the wolves is our only chance. It is our only hope against the hunters! Wow . . ." Shane looks to the floor for a moment.
"What?" I urge him.
"It feels so strange to think about how I used to be a hunter myself. And now . . . and now I am being hunted." Shane looks into my eyes, before reaching for one of my hands.
I begin to sing, smiling somberly, as I recite nickelback's lyrics to When We Stand Together.
"One more depending on a prayer
And we all look away
People pretending everywhere
It's just another day
There's bullets flying through the air
And they still carry on
We watch it happen over there
And then just turn it off"
Shane joins me sweetly, and we continue the song as a duet. Am I actually helping to reassure him, whatsoever?
"Hey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeah
We must stand together
Hey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeah
There's no giving in
Hey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeah
Hand in hand forever
Hey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeah
That's when we all win
Hey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeah
That's, that's, that's when we all win
That's, that's, that's when we all win
They tell us everything's alright
And we just go along
How can we fall asleep at night
When something's clearly wrong
When we could feed a starving world
With what we throw away
But all we serve are empty words
That always taste the same"
Suddenly, I notice that Lysander is beneath an oak tree in the distance, watching the two of us singing on the pack house porch. He frowns, before shrinking back into the shadows. I fail to understand his problem. He has two of the remianing three unicorns on the planet on his side for a war . . .
"Hey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeah
We must stand together
Hey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeah
There's no giving in
Hey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeah
Hand in hand forever
Hey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeah
That's when we all win
Hey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeah
That's, that's, that's when we all win
That's, that's, that's when we all win
The right thing to guide us
Is right here inside us
No one can divide us
When the light is nearly gone
But just like a heartbeat
The drumbeat carries on
And the drumbeat carries on
Just like a heart beat
Hey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeah
We must stand together
Hey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeah
There's no giving in
Hey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeah
Hand in hand forever
Hey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeah
That's when we all win
Hey, yeah, yeah, hey, yeah
That's, that's, that's when we all win
That's, that's, that's when we all win"

When Shane and I enter the small kitchen, filled with stainless steel appliances, we are immediately joined by Lysander and Leo.
Before Lysander can open his mouth, I ask, "Why does Leo follow you around so much?!"
"He is my beta," Lysander rolls his eyes like it is supposed to be obvious. "Look at this," a newspaper is thrown at my head. I read the headline, above a picture with none other than . . . Vincent.
He lays next to a body bag, covered in blood, his liver and intestines torn to shreds and spread across his open stomach.
The headline reads: Unidentified body found in the Glades. So much for our third unicorn . . .
