❝ Nothing quite makes my heart ache like our almost. ❞
She looked down at the crumbled piece of paper, skimming through the list of her final 3 wishes.
1. Fall in love myself.
2. Watch two people fall in love.
3. To leave, smiling.

Alyssa cracked open one eye, then the other.
Oh dear lord.
When she was sure that nobody was in the room, she groggily lifted her head up, checking for her phone. Alyssa expected a tonne lot of missed calls from her parents but there wasn't a single one.
"Hey, you alright?" Someone asked to her left. She quickly turned her head to find the one person that she was dreading speaking to. After the whirlwind of emotions from last night, Alyssa had no clue how to act.
Should she be annoyed or would that only show that she was jealous? He didn't know that she saw him after all. She wished that she could just close her eyes and pretend that she was asleep.
"Alright I guess," she replied, not meeting his eye. "Although I've got a splitting headache. I might of over done it with the drinks yesterday."
It wasn't the first time that she'd got drunk though it was hardly the first time that she promised not to do it again.
"How'd I get here?" She mumbled, looking around the room. Alyssa felt the bed dip down beside her.
"Well, I found Jace at one o'clock but he said that he hasn't seen you either. It was coming up to three-ish when we found you snuggled up on the floor with a cat," William answered, laughing to himself as Alyssa turned away embarrassed.
Don't act like you care when you were busy snogging that brunette for hours.
Alyssa was overwhelmed with feeling. Just when anger was coming through from yesterday, she found out that he was the one that bought her home. If he hadn't then she'd probably still be lying on the floor like a hobo. "Thanks," she mumbled weakly as he rubbed the back of his neck. Alyssa watched as he raked a hand through his hair, tussling the black waves.
"Uh, I called your Mum to tell her that you wouldn't be home yesterday," he added as Alyssa noted the nervousness in his voice.
"Thanks," she repeated feeling the awkwardness. Could she not have said something else, she wished. Alyssa cringed at the tension between the two of them since yesterday whist cursing her drunk self. She wanted to change it before she ran out of time.
Just do it and figure out what happens later, she thought to herself.
As he stood up to walk out the room, Alyssa grabbed his wrist stopping him from leaving. He lifted his head up, a smile on his face that didn't quite reach his eyes. "Yeah?"
"Um, about last, uh night-" Alyssa stuttered trying to get her point across. Thankfully, he interrupted her, putting a pause to her humiliation.
He took a step towards her, looking down before whispering to her. "Yeah, I'm sorry."
Alyssa's heart ached at the sincerity in his voice. She knew that he was genuinely apologising for giving her hope. Alyssa assumed that he felt bad.
Half-heartedly, Alyssa said the same, surveying as William smiled sadly and left the room.
Alyssa would never know that he wasn't apologising for staying away. He was apologising for panicking. Apologising for not inching closer. Apologising for not closing the gap between them.
