Braylee

It's already 7pm but we're still in our botanical laboratory, working with our plants and conducting observational experiments on them. My hands have been covered up in soil and plant tissues for the last five hours but I like it... it's the proof of my effort and hardwork.

"Great work, Emanuel," our professor says as he checks the sample I placed under the miscroscope. After checking my plant, he continued going over to check my classmates' plant.

"Girl, I heard Hawthorn beat you and your friends up. I can't believe na totoo talaga yung usap-usapan na medyo psycho siya. What's your plan?" bulong sa akin ng laboratory seatmate ko.

"Plan? W-what do you mean?" tanong ko. "A-and where did you even hear that?"

Lumingon sa amin ang isa pang babae na nasa harapang table namin. "Oh my God, so totoo? Hawthorn did beat you up!" gulat niyang bulalas. "Usap-usapan na yan sa facebook lalo sa confession pages. Di ka ba nago-online?" tanong pa niya. Sa isang iglap, napansin kong marami-rami na ang mga kaklase naming nakatingin sa akin, parang nag-aabang na makasagap ng chismis.

Napabuntong-hininga na lamang ako. "Look, it was all a misunderstanding. Hawthorn was just breaking up the fight but things spiraled out of control. He didn't beat up anyone. Yes he hit me but it was all an accident. Accident lang talaga kasi talaga." Giit ko. I emphasized the accident part para naman malinis ang pangalan ni Hawthorn.

"Accident?" Natawa ang seatmate ko. "Can you punch someone by accident? Kasing bullshit lang yan nung kapitbahay kong nangatwiran sa nanay niyang aksidente siyang nabuntis. Gaga so ano yun? Nadapa siya tas na shoot sa maling lugar so may batang nabuo?" natatawa niyang bulalas. Wait is she being sarcastic? Denver taught me about this... Oversimplification and ironic mockery daw ang isa sa signs ng sarcasm.

"What a psycho right?" The girl sitting at the back of us says. "He's cold and vile. No wonder loner siya at walang friends. Walang makatagal sa ugali niya."

"No! Hawthorn has friends, puro mayayabang pa nga eh," Another classmate says. "Grabe, I can't believe he has friends. I've never seen him smile or talk with emotion before," she adds.

Devil Denver ang bansag sa kanya? Akala ko ba Thorn ng Rosepike? Grabe, kawawa naman siya. He's not a psycho, he's just misunderstood.

"You don't have to deny about getting beat up, Braylee. Everyone knows Denver Hawthorn is a psychopath," my seatmate says again. "He's not called Devil Denver for nothing."

"But it was an accident!" giit kong muli, hindi ko napigilang magtaas ng boses. "Who are you going to believe? The people spreading rumors or the girl who got accidentally punched herself?" dagdag ko pa at sa puntong 'yon ay wala silang naisagot sa akin, natahimik silang lahat. Ayokong akalain nilang galit ako kaya ngumiti ako ng malapad.
